I’m going to share a secret about my family. . .We are diehard fans of Fleet Week! From childhood, before it was called “Fleet Week”, ships would dock on Staten Island and Dad would strengthen our weak little legs enough (with hard work around the house! Lol!) to climb up and down those ladders and through the ship without tripping, slipping or complaining. It was an exciting experience for us, and every year, without a miss, we would wait on lines to tour the ships. Since then, our family would venture to Ft. Wadsworth and wait for the Parade of Ships. Usually, it  would take a couple or more hours before the first one would come under the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. The kiddies would run around playing with the other kiddies as photographers would take…

Watching the Parade of ships on Wednesday at the beginning of Fleet Week was a treat!  Many had binoculars; some brought ladders to get a better view, some children sat on their parent’s shoulders.  A group from a senior citizen home arrived, climbed up the steep inclines of Von Briesen Park near Ft. Wadsworth, some with walkers, some with wheel chairs.  After a few hours of waiting, they left without seeing one ship but literally exercised while waiting, doing tai chi (put me to shame!) and enjoyed the fresh air.  The first ship of the “Parade” arrived around noon.

Touring the ships the next day was neat!

If you missed Fleet Week in 2013, I did, too.  Unfortunately, it was scrapped due to government budget cuts.  Do not despair!  Fleet Week will be back from May 21 through May 27.  Visiting New York for the 26th year will be members of the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.  Fleet Week began in 1984 and serves as a way for residents of New York City and the tri-state area to meet members of the service and to learn the latest capabilities of today’s military.  You do not want to miss the parade of ships on May 21.  It is the most beautiful display as they pass under the Verrazano Bridge.

It seems like just yesterday that I remember Dad bringing his four children down to tour the aircraft carriers--these huge Navy ships docked in St. George.  I was in…
