Staten Island is a great place to grow vegetables, and the presentation by Jay Weichun "Growing Food on Staten Island" yesterday at the College of Staten Island was proof.  He spent five years documenting and interviewing home gardeners from different backgrounds and nationalities throughout the Island. I hope you enjoyed the photos that my gentle readers shared last week of their mothers.  If you wish to send in a photo, I will post any and all of them.  This week, I took a long road trip with my son, daughter-in-law and two precious grandchildren.  It was trying at times and  filled with activity, but I was glad to spend four entire days with my loved ones.  I was also amazed how the parents were able to get the kiddies washed, dressed, fed and on the road to each of the events we attended without much ado.  Wow! The Freshkills Park, which is usually closed to the public, had its fourth annual Sneak Peak event in September 2013.  I attended with my son, daughter-in-law and two-year old…

Freshkills Park has slowly been coming to fruition in small stages throughout the past few years. The park, which sits upon a former landfill, will become the largest park in New York City upon its completion. The project is a huge undertaking and many of its promised features are still in the preliminary planning stages. The city offered residents a sneak peak this past weekend which had made it clear just how grand this park will prove to be. Divided up into five sections, the massive piece of land will feature sprawling meadows, intricate pathways, and various outdoor recreation zones. Since the park is so large, it would…
