HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020!! Did you get to beat pots and pans outside at the strike of midnight? For as long as I can remember from childhood through adulthood, whenever we had a New Year's party at  home, it was our family tradition to stand on the porch and bang pots and pans, cow bells and/or other noisemakers to welcome in the new year.  We could hear all the boats in the Kill Van Kull sounding their horns in unison as we listened to fireworks going off all around the neighborhood. What are your New Year traditions?  Please feel free to share.

Thank you, my gentle reader, Dorcas, for sharing photos from the Kwanzaa Celebration which was hosted by the African American Community in collaboration with the JCC Beacon Program at JHS 49 on Friday.

Did you participate in any of the many Halloween activities on Staten Island with your children or attend All About Bats at Bloomingdale Park? I always loved getting dressed up for Halloween as a kid (never store bought, always old clothes from Mom or Dad turned into a costume), and I always love seeing houses decorated for the season. A few houses I have passed lately are displays of death, horror--chillingly grotesque. Is this what Halloween has become? Are we so immune to horror that we want to add it our every day lives? My mother was the wife of a detective, and I think that sleuth gene rubbed off on her. She had to unearth every last detail of a story (she was reading or listening to) to come to a satisfactory conclusion. I often wonder if she would have grasped the Facebook craze and spend hours reading other peoples stories.  What do you do to relax?  Meditate? Walk? Yoga?  Knit?  Read?  Dance? Hiking? Work out at the gym?  Pet your cat? Walk your dog? Hang out with…

As I promised myself politics would not be included in my blog this week, I will only say this: Donald J. Trump is now President of the United States.  Say a prayer, take a deep breath and let us start on the road to first uniting our friends and family instead of badmouthing and unfriending on Facebook those who do not agree with our opinions. These people are close to you! Charity, compassion, understanding and love begin at home!

As I write this blog tonight, we are in the throes of a Nor’easter!  The South has been hit hard as well as the Eastern coastline.  I am keeping my eye on the huge trees in the neighboring properties surrounding my home and garage and wonder which one, if any will fall.
