Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis organized/hosted the Staten Island Tax Protest on Saturday attended by over 200 people.  Noting that Staten Island residents are being driven out of their hometown by exorbitant tax increases, the protest also brought up the fact that the formation of a property tax commission by Mayor de Blasio did not include a Staten Islander.  A number of elected officials and candidates were on hand to voice their support for Staten Islanders. As a result, de Blasio announced the next day that Islander Allen Cappelli has been added to the commission.  At least it’s a start!

The 10th Annual Polish Festival organized by St. Stanislaus Kostka Church on Sunday at Snug Harbor was a great success!  The traditional dancing was in full…

My vegetable garden did not do as well as in summers past, but my grandson and I were able to harvest some beans (we ate them immediately after picking), a few small tomatoes, a few green peppers, a bunch of hot peppers, four butternut squashes and lettuce.  Luckily for us, our neighbors have shared their long green Sri Lankan beans which have also attached itself to my Rose of Sharon so we had plenty to keep our bellies filled. The heat and humidity didn’t bother me too much!  Never did hear from any of my gentle readers whether their children walk—and I mean really walk for many blocks or miles as I did as a kid.  At a recent community meeting, a discussion ensued about the different venues for our children and teens to play ball or meet with others their ages. Some parents stated that everything is too far for their offspring.  A number of us commented to the parents that the kids can hop a bus or WALK the 7 or 10…

As I watch the last snow fall of the season from my home office (yes, this is the last, hopefully), I dream sweet, pleasant dreams of warmer days, my garden and how much fun I’ll have digging in the soil, planting vegetables, new plants and flowers.  Positive thinking always chases the doldrums away!

This Saturday, 3/7, a blood drive will be held from 9-3 at the gymnasium of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, 23 Summit St. in memory of Firefighter John G. Chipura, who died a hero on September 11, 2001.  I met “Chippy” on a real estate showing a few days before 9/11.  His buddy was interested in buying a commercial building and accompanied him for a second opinion.  He told me he had been a police officer at the 72nd Pct. in Brooklyn; after a few…
