Through the book, I traveled to China in the 1820’s where I met Lily and followed her life into her old age as Lady Lu. I learned sadly about foot-binding, the joys and sorrows of female friendships and of nu-shu, which is the secret-code writing, developed thousands of years ago and used by women in a remote area of southern Hunan Province. I hope you had a happy, healthy Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and enjoyed family and friends and maybe even started new traditions.  Maybe you volunteered by distributing presents to seniors at nursing homes or at hospitals in the pediatric units or served dinner at a community kitchen.  A group of my friends, who sing carols at Silver Lake Nursing Home each year, returned once again last Saturday.  Instead of singing only in the dining room, we visited the day room on each floor and were able to engage the residents in sing alongs.  I felt like we touched each resident, but, in reality, we were touched when many smiled, loudly sang along and thanked us when we left.  It took all I had to hold back the tears.

The St. George Theatre has been a staple of North Shore entertainment for a whopping 85 years. To celebrate, the theater is hosting a series of holiday-themed events this month.

On Friday, December 5th, the theater will present Irving Berlin's classic musical "Holiday Inn" starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire. The viewing party begins at 7pm, and the movie will begin at 8pm. This event is free for all ages.

On Saturday, December 6th, at 8pm, a "Doo-Wop Extravaganza" will take place. The concert will feature the musical doo-wop stylings of Bobby Rydell, Charlie Thomas & The Drifters, Jay Siegal & The Tokens, and The Tymes. Tickets run from $25-$60.

From Friday, December 12th through Sunday, December 14th, the theater will present its annual…
