If you came to “Back to the Beach” and stopped by the Gillani Homes booth, I thank those of you who signed up for my “Weekend Events on Staten Island” blog and/or took a chance on the Scratch-Off Lottery Tickets House. Below are some photos from the two days at the beach. It was nice and hot out but the sea breezes kept us cool.

 

Did you sign up for Go!Healthy food box at Goodhue last week? For info on how to receive your food box, check out the last entry. We received a sample of Tabbouleh Salad. Our food box included blueberries, kirby cucumbers, plum tomatoes, green zucchini, fennel, garlic scrapes, green cabbage and parsley.  Check it out!

The NYC Police Dept. Borough Command will host the NYPD Harmony Day on Wednesday from 10-2 at Clove Lake Park, 1050 Clove Rd. Lunch and refreshments will be offered as well as free giveaways, NYPD crime prevention safety tips, rock wall climbing, face painting and more.

Bring the family to Bobaloo's Music and Storytelling Performance on Wednesday at 3 to the Stapleton Library, 132 Canal St. "Bobaloo" Bob Basey combines flute, guitar and storytelling with folk songs, nursery rhymes, and more.

Your children of all ages will enjoy Princess Petunia and the Dragon on Wednesday at 3:30 at the South Beach Library, 21-25 Robin Rd. Once upon a time, the sun stopped shining! It’s up to Princess Petunia to defeat bullies, help wizards, ride a dragon into space and save the day. This medieval adventure, a hand puppet show in a traditional booth, includes lots of laughter and a cast of hilarious characters. Presented by WonderSpark Puppets.

Participate in Con Edison Family Science Night: Discover the Microverse! Wednesday from 6:30-8 at Greenbelt Recreation Center, 700 Rockland Ave.  What happens when you mix microbiology and microscopy? Maybe looking at tiny living things will lead to big discoveries!  You will discover microorganisms and explore the unseen Microverses they inhabit. Good for ages 8-10 with adult. Attend the Fishing Clinic on Thursday 7/18 from 11-1 at Great Kills Park, Hylan Blvd. & Buffalo St.  Learn the sport of angling through a variety of different approaches with experts from the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation. Join the Urban Park Rangers at Nature Center Adventures on Thursday from 11-12 at Blue Heron Nature Center, 222 Poillon Ave.  Nature Center Adventures connect New Yorkers of all ages to nature through experiential learning including scavenger hunts, nature crafts and games, and getting up close and personal with our nature center animals.

Children ages 13-18 will enjoy Comic Culture Tribes on Thursday at 3:30 at the South Beach Library, 21-25 Robin Rd.  A comics/manga-based art program teaches drawing and writing with a focus on Tribal Futurism. We will combine stories that use science fiction, fantasy and explore our indigenous/native cultures, mythologies and history. Presented by Ivan Velez.

Attend the Lisa Lisa/Cover Girls/DJ Lucy Euclid Concert on Thursday from 7-9 at  Corporal Thompson Park, 166 Broadway.In the mid-80s, Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam led a Latin Freestyle scene that birthed the likes of Madonna and Shannon, helping take the Latin-influenced hip-hop disco music mainstream. The trio had multiple platinum-certified LPs and dominant chart-topping success with hits like “I Wonder If I Take You Home” and “Can You Feel The Beat.” While Lisa Lisa ruled the roost at Freestyle hubs Funhouse and Paradise Garage in Manhattan, supporting act The Cover Girls held court uptown in the Bronx at The Devil’s Nest, making futuristic soulful dance music with next-generation electronic instruments.

Meet your friends at the Summer Sunset Concert Series featuring Anthony DeRoss and Joan Caddell & the Midnight Choir on Thursday from 7-9 at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terr.

Sprinklerfest 2019 takes place on Friday, 7/19 from 12-4 at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terr. This is a great way for you and the kiddies to cool off, enjoy an afternoon of sprinklers, blow-up attractions and other fun activities.

Design and create your own animations and learn about technology in the media industry at the Coding Club with Google CS on Friday at 3 at the Stapleton Library, 132 Canal St. This is an 8-week series and good for ages 8-12. Registration required; call 718-727-0427.

On Friday from 7-9, City Parks Foundation will present a Free Summer Concert at Corporate Thompson Park, featuring Grammy winner Jody Watley, joined by the Mobile Mondays DJ’s, Operator Emz and Joey Carvello.

Community Appreciation Day Festival and Arts & Crafts Fair will be on Saturday from 12-4 at the Alice Austen House Museum, 2 Hylan Blvd.  Enjoy a festival of food, family arts activities and live music at the annual community open house. This year, the work of local artists and artisans will be showcased, with booths where you can support the local Staten Island Arts community and purchase a unique gift or personal artwork.

On Saturday from 4-7 at MakerPark, 450 Front St., the Nigerian Cultural Associate Drums for Peace Festival invites drummers and non-drummers from all walks of life to come together and make beautiful noise in the name of peace. Audience participation is highly encouraged. No prior drumming experience is necessary.

On Saturday at 7, the National Park Service will host a blazing Campfire at Great Kills Beach,  3270 Hylan Blvd. that will include an evening of music and stories. Bring a blanket or beach chair.

The Staten Island Chapter of the AAA hosts public Stargazing on Saturday from 8-11 in Gateway Great Kills National Park, Hylan Blvd. and Buffalo St.

Have fun with Walk Up Paddling on Sunday 7/21 from 11-2 at the Conference House Park,  7455 Hylan Blvd.  Sessions generally run 2-3 hours depending on the tide. Please wear watershoes and water appropriate clothing and be mindful of your expensive cellphones and eyewear.

Attend the Sea Shanty Session on Sunday from 2-5 at the Noble Maritime Collection, 1000 Richmond Terr. Led by the Folk Music Society of New York, this program offers a great opportunity to experience authentic, time-honored maritime songs in an appropriately historic setting. The sessions are free and family friendly, and you are encouraged to sing along if the mood strikes you! If you can’t make it this weekend, we hold a session on the third Sunday of every month.

Bring the family to Bessie’s Big Shot on Sunday at 3 to Corporal Thompson Park,  166 Broadway.  Bessie the cow dreams of joining the circus. But can she lift more than Ziegfried, the strongest man in the world? Fly on the trapeze high above the crowd? Come root Bessie on in this variety show as she attempts the impossible and searches for her special talents.
