Were you able to see any of the fireworks displays in your neighborhood, at the Conference House, The Staten Island Yankees Game, Macy’s on 4th of July or listened to OutLoud reading of the Declaration of Independence?   Did you proudly fly The American flag?

There is still time to get in on Family Camping.  One of my gentle readers called me about the event, and I steered her in the right direction.  The NYC Parks is sponsoring Family Camping Staten Island.  Camp dates and parks are 7/10 at High Rock, 7/18 at Blue Heron, 8/1 at Blue Heron, 8/8 at High Rock and 8/14 at Conference House.  The Urban Park Rangers will bring almost everything you need for a night spent alfresco, including the tent, dinner and even s'mores! The staff provides most of the equipment; all you need to pack are clothes, flashlights and sleeping bags. Give-Back Wednesdays is a new summer tradition. To raise awareness of the benefits of hometown charities, Mark Tranchina, co-owner of the Vanderbilt hosts this event with a FREE fireworks show on the boardwalk.  The line-up is as follows:

Calling all seniors!  If you want to get involved in dancing, bingo, card games, computers, bocce and much more, there are many groups that are interested in having you as a member.  It’s a great way to STAY YOUNG!  Arrochar Friendship Club, 44 Bionia Ave., Great Kills Friendship Club, 11 Sampson Ave., Mount Loretto Friendship Club, 6581 Hylan Blvd., Todt Hill Friendship Club, 184 Schmidts Lane, are just a few that meet on Friday.  Other clubs meet on different days.  For more info, visit sifriendshpclubs.com 

BACK TO THE BEACH returns to the Midland Beach Boardwalk on Saturday, 7/11 and Sunday, 7/12, 11 a.m. to nightfall when you will be treated to a fireworks display.  Staten Island University Hospital will have a booth with their Medical Outreach Team with info and education about healthy lifestyle, healthy aging as well as FREE Skin Cancer Screening.  There is something for everyone, music, dancing, crafts, performances, many booths including Gillani Homes.  Stop by and say, “hello”.  If you are in the market to purchase or sell a home, commercial building, land, or business, we can assist you in all your needs.  If you are one of my gentle readers, be sure to say so and introduce yourself.  I would love to take a selfie with you.

The PAL (Police Athletic League) is celebrating 101 years of its Summer Playstreets Program from 7/6-8/21 from 9-5, including four on Staten Island.  Certain streets are closed off to provide children with supervised activities, sports, arts and crafts, games, music and dance.  The streets are as follows:

Bowen St., Clifton, between Sobel Ct., Roff St. in the Park Hill Houses

Cpl. Lawrence C. Thompson Park, between Broadway and Henderson Ave., West Brighton

Mahoney Playground, between Beechwood, Crescent and Cleveland Streets, New Brighton

Big Park, between Continental Pl. and Grandview Ave., Mariners Harbor.

Every Saturday, from 10-11:30 a.m. at Port Richmond H.S., enjoy FREE Yoga.  Sponsored by Emblem Health, all equipment is provided as well as free child care.  See you there! 

Volunteers are welcomed to help to clean and maintain Westerleigh Park, by raking, planting, gardening on Saturday 7/11 from 9-12 and every Saturday.  Enjoy a cup of coffee and a donut while getting great exercise.   

Want to learn about composting?  Join the Green Thumb Workshop: Tea for 2 Billion Organisms on Saturday from 11-1 at the Moravian Churches Community Garden, 1657 Victory Blvd.  

Want to treat your honey to the movies?  Bring a picnic dinner, lawn chairs or a blanket and enjoy “Jurassic Park” Saturday from 8:30-10:30 p.m. at Willowbrook Park.  It is rated PG 13 and may not be appropriate for younger children. 

On Sunday, 7/12 , learn Basic Canoeing at Willowbrook Park.  Trained Urban Park Rangers will lead you on canoe adventures.  Great for all skill levels.  Children 8 and order are welcomed.

 

Don’t miss the La Isla Bonita Summer Festival at the beautiful Faber Park, Richmond Terr. in Port Richmond, Sunday, 7/12 from 3-8 p.m. The festival will feature live music, DJ sets, and live art.  Community partners include: Kristopher Johnson, Deep Tanks Studio, NYSAI Press, Ele Eme Project, Projectivity, Island Voice, Shaolin Yacht Co, Peace Action SI, and more!
