I attended the live reenactment of the September 11, 1776 Peace Conference Celebration at Conference House Park. The crowd enjoyed colonial dancing, 18th century craftsmen and women demonstrating various trades and crafts, colonial era vendors, homemade refreshments and historic house tours. The actors in the reenactment were spot on! I felt as if I was a part of the Conference as Ben Franklin, Edward Rutledge, John Adams met with British Navy Admiral Howe.

September 1, 2001 was a sad day for the entire world. I and many others will never forget that date, how we witnessed two hijacked planes destroy the World Trade Center, another plane flew into the Pentagon in Arlington, VA and United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into a field in Shanksville, PA. With friends and family working in Manhattan and my sister nearby the crash in PA, we struggled that day to contact each other to hear their voices and make sure all were safe. As the days, months and years went by and loved ones were found dead or missing or never found at all, the pain lasted in the funerals we attended, streets being renamed and those sick, dead and still dying who worked tirelessly to save lives in the aftermath.

The Angels’ Circle will hold its annual memorial ceremony on Tuesday, 9/10 at 7 p.m. on the corner of Fingerboard Rd. and Hylan Blvd. in Grasmere.
On Tuesday, 9/10 at 7 p.m., the Notre Dame Alumni Club of Staten Island will sponsor an “Eve of Solemn Remembrance”, a celebration of Mass in memory of friends, relatives and neighbors who lost their lives on 9/11 at Our Lady of Pity R.C. Church, 1616 Richmond Ave. Bishop John J. O’Hara, episcopal vicar of Staten Island, will be the main celebrant and homilist, and the names of the Staten Islanders whose lives were lost on that day will be read.
On Wednesday beginning at 8:46 a.m., the FDNY Rescue 5 in Concord, members of the community are invited to participate in a memorial prayer service, including moments of silence, at the Clove Rd. firehouse. Candle lighting will take place for any victims, including the 11 members of Rescue 5 who perished while responding to the terrorist attacks. Moments of silence will be held, beginning at 8:46 a.m., the moment Flight 11 struck the North Tower. Participants may gather at the firehouse beginning at 8 a.m. for the service. A private reception will be held at the Snug Harbor Cultural Center for Rescue 5 members and families.
On Wednesday at 11 a.m., Richmond University Medical Center will pay tribute to the victims of the attacks and honor military and first responders at a ceremony in front of the 9/11 memorial adjacent to the main entrance at 355 Bard Ave. Physicians, staff, patients and community leaders are expected to participate. The ceremony will include tributes, a moment of silence and reflections from first responders who participated in the rescue operations 18 years ago.
On Wednesday at 6:30, all are asked to join together as one at the Postcards Memorial, a sacred spot that looks toward the NYC skyline at St. George Esplanade adjacent to the Ferry Terminal. Free parking for the ceremony will be available in the New York Wheel Parking Garage (located next to Richmond County Bank Ballpark at Richmond Terr. and Nicholas St.). Those who wish to attend can also access the memorial via the walkway adjacent to the ballpark. The memorial is a short walk from the St. George Ferry Terminal and the Empire Outlets.
Participate in the 1-2 mile Bird and Nature Walk: Conference House Park on Wednesday 9/11 from 10-12 at Conference House Park, 7455 Hylan Blvd.
Bring the babies ages 0-18 mos. to Story Time on Wednesday at 11 at the Todt Hill-Westerleigh Library where they will listen to fun and interactive stories and songs.
Kids 8-14 will enjoy the Lego Club on Wednesday at 4 at the Todt Hill-Westerleigh Library, 2550 Victory Blvd. The library will supply Legos, while you provide imagination. All materials must stay at the library -- so bring a camera to document your creations!
Children of all ages are welcome to listen to amazing stories from around the world at Folktale/ Fable and Craft on Thursday, 9/12 at 3:30 at the South Beach Library, 21-25 Robin Rd. “Seven Blind Mice” by Ed Yong will be read and children will make a colorful mouse! A discussion will follow about the moral, and create a character from the story.
Bring the family to Movies Under the Stars: Dumbo (2019) on Friday, 9/13 from 7:30–9:30 at Wolfe's Pond Park, Cornelia Ave. and Chester Ave. A young elephant with oversized ears and the powers of flight becomes a circus superstar. His caretaker is torn between his employer's exploitative thirst for profits and his children's desire to reunite Dumbo with his mother. Bring a chair or blanket.
Staten Island Adventure Day, presented by Boy Scouts of America, takes place on Saturday, 9/14 from 10-2 at William Pouch Scout Camp, 1285 Manor Rd. No admission fee. Free for boys and girls. Participate in Shibori in Shades of Blue on Saturday from 11-2 at the Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Ave. Join artist Janice Patrignani for a fiber art workshop using natural indigo dye. On Saturday 9/14 from 1-3, enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings while working on the Turn & Learn Compost Work Day (NYC Compost Project) demonstration site. The best way to learn about compost is to make it, and attending our Turn & Learns will make you a pro. Bring a water bottle, wear closed-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. If you help us make compost, you can take compost. Please bring your own container. This is a volunteer event and not a pick-up event. You must volunteer at the workday to receive compost.
