HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!
Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain. On Staten Island, we celebrate by attending the 4th of July Parade in Travis, barbecues, picnics, baseball games, family reunions, celebrating the history and traditions of the United States. Patriotic songs such as "The Star Spangled Banner", "God Bless America", "America the Beautiful", "My Country, Tis of Thee", "This Land is Your Land", "Stars and Stripes Forever" are played and sung at events on this day and bring tears to my eyes. I Love America, the best country in the world!
The 106th 4th of July Parade begins with a ceremony at noon in front of P.S. 26 in Travis and steps off at 12:30. Save a favorite spot for your friends and family and arrive early. (Don’t forget your sunscreen!) It is a wonderful event and not to be missed.
Today at noon, join Staten Island OutLOUD for a community reading and conversation on the Declaration of Independence at the historic Conference House, 298 Satterlee St. (at the southern tip of Hylan Blvd. At the historic Fort Wadsworth at 2, join Staten Island OutLOUD to read and share ideas on the Declaration of Independence. Rain or shine (if it rains the event will be indoors). PLEASE BRING LAWN CHAIRS!
The Staten Island Philharmonic Concert & Fireworks will entertain tonight from 6-11 at Alice Austen House Museum, 2 Hylan Blvd. They will perform "American Salute" at 6 p.m., followed by viewing of citywide fireworks displays.
Have a safe and happy weekend. Fly your flag proudly! God Bless America!
