Did you take advantage of the FDNY FREE smoke and carbon monoxide alarm installation program in the St. George Ferry Terminal.  No?  If you have a smoke and/or carbon monoxide alarm, don’t forget to change the batteries.  So what did you dress up as for Halloween?  What was your costume?  Here are a few I encountered. The upside down man, the hillbilly. I even met my doppleganger!!

 

Don’t miss the 25th Annual Cranberry Festival at Bethel United Methodist Church, 7033 Amboy Rd., Tottenville, Friday, 11/6, 4:30-9, Saturday, 11/7, 8 a.m.-9 p.m.  Everything cranberry will be served.  Friday evening, a Turkey dinner with all the fixings will be available.  On Saturday, breakfast will be available beginning 8 a.m.  Call for reservations 718-356-8485 and more info.

The dedication of a special memorial plaque in honor of Marine Cpl. Lawrence Thompson, a West Brighton native who graduated from PS 18 and Pt. Richmond H.S. and was the first African American Marine killed in Vietnam from Staten Island, will be held on Saturday, 11/7 at 11 a.m. at Corporal Thompson Park, Broadway and Henderson Ave.  Let us remember Marine Cpl.Thompson who was K.I.A. on June 10, 1967.

Saturday from 11-3 (rain or shine) bring pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns and gourds for the PUMPKIN SMASH 2015 at PS 9, 1055 Targee St.  You smash them, and the NYC Compost Project will turn them into compost for City parks and green spaces.  Look forward to refreshments--including a chili cook-off, raffles and more.

On Saturday, 11/7 from 9-4 attend the Eger Scandinavian holiday fair at Eger Health Care & Rehabilitation Center, 110 Meisner Ave.  Traditional  food, handmade gifts and dolls, Santa, raffles, music and much more will be featured.  Call 718-989-3125 for more info.

On Saturday, from 10-4, the New Dorp Moravian Church, 2205 Richmond Rd. is holding a Holiday Fair and trash and treasure sale. 

The annual Holiday Fair at St. Albans Church, 76 St. Alban's Pl. takes place Saturday from 10-7.  Attic treasures, Christmas table, handmade afghans and meals will be available.

Saturday, at 9 a.m., Buck’s Hollow Tree Planting will take place as part of the Million TreesNYC project.  Meet at Buck’s Hollow (between Manor Rd. and Rockland Ave. 

Join the Staten Island Bicycle Association Bike Ride in the parking lot in back of New Dorp High School at Miller Field on Saturday, at 8:30 a.m.  Participants must be over 18, wear a helmet and be able to ride at a minimum of 10 miles per hour.  For more info, call 718-351-6970 or visit sibike.org

There is still time to sign up for the “Optimism Strikes out Parkinson’s” Bowl-A-Thon, an annual event to help raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s Disease.  There will be raffles for local community prizes and baskets.  Event takes place at Rab’s Country Lanes, 1600 Hylan Blvd. on Sunday, 11/8 from 12:30-3:30. Registration is $25/person, which includes pizza, soda, t-shirt, bowling shoe rental and open bowling for two hours. All are welcome to bowl; if you can’t bowl, you can come and root on the bowlers or send a donation to: www.apdaparkinson.org

Join the Trail of the Month Hike:  Red Trail on Sunday at 11 a.m. at beginning at the Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Ave., then to Heyerdahl Hill, Bucks Hollow and Richmond Town.  Registration required, call 718-351-3450. 

Attend Second Sunday Open Mic. Staten Island Creative Community’s (SICC) Spoken Word committee offers writers a comfortable environment in which to present their work to new audiences Sunday from 3-7 at 776 Richmond Terr. 

The Holiday Fair at the Arden Heights Jewish Center, 1766 Arthur Kill Rd. is Sunday at 10 a.m. Handmade jewelry, children's clothing and handmade sweaters, Handbags, Chocolates, Gift Baskets, Judaica Items, handmade Cards, Socks, Travel Opportunities and much more will be for sale.  Light refreshments will be available.

AHRC NYC is offering the Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP).  If you are between the ages of 16-24, out of school, not employed, do not have a college education, call Anna, 718-662-1432 for more information.  You will need photo ID, proof of age, proof of address, proof of eligibility to work.  If accepted, interns will receive 4 wks of paid orientation, 10 wks of paid internship, work readiness training and job counseling.  AHRC is located at 25 Victory Blvd. 2nd Fl.

Early registration has begun for emergency snow laborers who remove snow and ice citywide from bus stops, crosswalks, fire hydrants and streets in the City after heavy snowfalls. (I know, I know—who wants to think about SNOW?!)  Individuals interested can register at their local district Sanitation garage weekdays between 7 and 3.  They will be paid $13.50 per hour, and $20.25 per hour after 40 hours are worked in a week. Applicants must be 18+ years of age, eligible to work in the U.S. and capable of performing heavy physical labor. You must bring two small photos (1 ½ square), original and copy of two forms of identification and Social Security card. http://www1.nyc.gov/site/dsny/index.page 

Save the Date for a FREE Memory Screening Event, Wednesday, 11/11, from 9-11 a.m. at the Colonnade Diner, 2001 Hylan Blvd.  Sponsored by the Advanced Memory Institute and Staten Island Agency for Alzheimer’s & Dementia, there will be a Q&A session, brief screenings of memory function and light breakfast for registered attendees only.  RSVP at 718-667-7110.

VETERAN’S DAY is on Wednesday, 11/11.  Please honor our Veterans that day.  Show your support by attending the Veteran’s Day Parade; thank those Veterans you know for their service to our country.  Our servicemen are to be honored every day for the selfless work they have signed up for to keep our country FREE, for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Attend the dedication of a special memorial plaque in honor of Marine Cpl. Lawrence Thompson this Saturday (details above).  I attended a dedication yesterday for SSG Michael Ollis who was killed while saving the life of a Polish serviceman, Lieutenant Karol Cierpica, in Afghanistan.  Eight other Staten Island servicemen who died in the line of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan were also honored.
