WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (12/9 – 12/13/15)

The Holiday Stroll along the Forest Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) last Thursday was a blast. Santa Claus was out and about.  Families were happy and friendly--tasting food, drinking hot cocoa, coffee and even wine at Jean’s Fine Wines and taking pictures with Santa.  This was an enjoyable event, one which I recommend to all my gentle readers.  Shop locally this holiday season. Small businesses are the backbone of our Island.  Below are some of the photos taken at the Stroll.

On Thursday and Friday, 12/10, 12/11, check out the Pop-Up Holiday Market at the Staten Island Cultural Lounge at the St. George Ferry Terminal featuring the work of Staten Island artists and artisans.  Call 718-447-3329 for info.

I Remember Christmas - A Christmas play about the true meaning of Christmas will be presented  Friday and Sunday, 12/11 and 12/13 at 7:30 at El Bethel Assembly Church, 914 Jewett Ave.  Admission is FREE.  Call 718-727-2773 for info.

On Saturday and Sunday, 12/12 and 12/13 from 11-4, visit Clove Lakes Rehab and Nursing Home on Fanning Street, Bradley Ave. exit for the Annual Holiday Train Show, sponsored by the Richmond County Railroad Club.  Twelve (yes 12!) complete Lionel Train Sets will be raffled off.  FREE parking, FREE admission!  Take part in door prizes and FREE giveaways for kids together with FREE photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Last year, I shared with you about a friend who arranges an event at Silver Lake Nursing Home, 275 Castleton Ave. for the holidays.  We pass the word and a nice crowd of carolers will sing for the residents this Saturday, 12/12 at 11:00 a.m.  If you would care to have a feel-good day making a lot of people happy, please meet us.  It doesn’t matter if you are not a professional singer. None of us are!  It’s the camaraderie and enthusiasm that makes the day. You can call or e-mail me so I know to direct you to our meeting place.

The Kiwanis Club of Staten Island is holding its annual coat drive for needy Staten Islanders on Saturday beginning at 11. Collection will be in the parking lot of Sacred Heart Church, 981 Castleton Ave. (corner of North Burgher Ave.). Winter coats for children and adults that are in gently used condition are needed. For more information, contact Mark Loffredo at 718-447-1234.

The Joan & Alan Bernikow Jewish Community Center, 1466 Manor Rd. continues their toy, food (non-perishable and kosher) and winter clothing drive through the end of December.  Call 718-475-5200 for  info.

The St. Peter's High School Alumni 6th Annual Christmas Concert takes place on Sunday, 12/13 at 4 at St. Peter's Church, 53 St. Mark's Place.  All concert proceeds go towards the Carl W. Lesch Scholarship to benefit students at St. Peter's Boys High School - Class of 2016, and to benefit Women's causes such as Breast Cancer, Battered Women, etc., in the name of St. Peter's High School for Girls Alumnae Association. A tree lighting, sponsored by the Richmond Road Merchants Assn., will take place in the Santander Bank parking lot on the corner of Liberty Ave. and Richmond Rd. on Sunday from 2-5.  The event will feature a visit by Santa Claus, a DJ, rides for children and refreshments.
