WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (6/17 – 6/21/15)

Did you meet your friends at the third annual FREE Atlantic Salt Maritime Festival on Sunday?  The US Coast Guard training ship Eagle was a beauty to tour.  It was a pleasure chatting with members of the crew who hail from all over the country. What a noble and terrific way to see the world!  There were plenty of activities for the kids—bouncy house, slides, arts and crafts, paper boat races, free watermelon, ices, hot dogs, cold water, music, dancing, entertainment.  Did you attend the concert “Saluting the Flag in Song and Dance” at St. John’s celebrating the 240th birthday of the U.S. Army ?  And did you fly your American Flag on Sunday, 6/14—Flag Day?  I saw many flags flying and was inspired.  Maybe patriotism and love of our country is returning.  Many people blame politics or politicians for everything bad in this country.  Instead of blaming, get involved!  Make a change!  Make a difference!

Has your child signed up for the Summer Reading Challenge at the New York Public Library?  Yesterday, I accompanied my grandson to the Tottenville Branch for pre-school fun time.  He was excited to show his log and the progress so far in reading many books.  I was impressed that, at the end of the fun time with the librarian, Miss Amy, reading books and doing arts and crafts, he chose a number of books to take home and was actually reading sentences!  This program is for kids of all ages--sign them up today!

Thursday, 6/18, at 4 p.m., Universal Temple of the Arts will present a FREE public performance of the classic “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. The children studied acting/directing techniques, basic elements of visual arts, set design, operation of video and digital cameras to document the program/production and basic elements of sewing for costumes.  This play will take place at PS 20, 161 Park Ave. in Port Richmond.

Friday, 6/19, at 7 starts the Staten Island Yankees Season at the Richmond County Bank Ballpark in St. George.  If you haven’t taken the family to a game, do so this summer.  With all the excitement of a “major league” baseball game at a less costly admission fee and merely a bus or railroad trip, you will enjoy giveaways, activities for the kids and a fun time out for the afternoon or evening.  Check out the City views from the Ballpark!

Every Saturday from 10-11:30 a.m. at Port Richmond H.S., enjoy FREE Yoga.  Sponsored by Emblem Health, mats are provided as well as free child care.  See you there!

On Saturday from noon – 6, attend the Sandy Ground Festival, 1538 Woodrow Rd. in Rossville.  Arrive early to enjoy the entertainment, a tour of the historical museum, absolutely delicious chicken, ribs, collard greens and more.  For info, call 718-317-5796.

Staten Island’s LUMEN begins at 7 p.m. and goes till midnight on Saturday at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terr.  The annual video/installation/performance art showcase will feature more than 30 performers, videographers, choreographers and installation makers.  Visit SIArts.org for more info.

On Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Great Kills Gateway Park Beach Center, 3270 Hylan Blvd., bring lawn chairs or blankets and hunker down for a campfire story of pirates and buried treasure.  Staten Island OutLOUD will present a reading of  “Treasure Island”

Discover Staten Island’s role in the American Revolution and how those events shaped the Island of today at the Conference House, Satterlee St. & Hylan Blvd. on Saturday at 1.  At 11, enjoy a walk or run through the paths while the kids participate in arts and crafts at the Visitor Center.  Check out other activities at http://www.nycgovparks.org/contact-parks

Sunday, 6/21 at 2, attend a FREE performance by Banda Magda at Snug Harbor, in cooperation with Carnegie Hall’s Neighborhood Concerts Series.  The music forays into Brazilian Baiao rhythms, Greek dance music, jazz, samba and tango.

Join the St. George Walking Tour sponsored by the Staten Island Museum on Sunday at 2.  Meet at the Museum at 75 Stuyvesant Pl. beforehand.  Call 718-727-1135 for info.

PUNK ISLAND returns on Sunday from 11-9.  Over 90 bands on 7 stages will perform at the Coast Guard Plaza next to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. Wear sun screen, bring food and non-alcoholic beverages.  Food vendors will be on site.  For more info, visit punkislandnyc.org

Boardwalk Days are back at South Beach.  Every Sunday through 9/6 from 4-8 enjoy FREE events featuring music and food at the beach. Bring your blanket or beach chair (or rent one at the Boardwalk Grill) and settle in for a tuneful afternoon and evening.  These events are presented by Boardwalk Events Initiatives Group and The Vanderbilt with the South Shore Kiwanis Club.  Check out their site for more info.
