Singing is good for you and your health!  Are you ready for this weekend and the Saturday Doo-Wop Show?  On 8/15, Vito Picone and the Elegants will be singing at the Freedom Circle in Midland Beach.  Opening act will be The Expressions at 6 p.m..  This is a FREE concert.  Bring your lawn chairs, put on your dancing shoes and get ready to sing along and maybe even do a dance or two or three.

On Sunday, 8/16 at 4, catch the Bruce Springsteen Tribute BandSaints in the City, on the Boardwalk at South Beach.

Join the Amateur Astronomers Association of NY for Stargazing at Great Kills Park on Saturday at 8:30 p.m. at Gateway National Recreation Area at Great Kills Park, Hylan Blvd. at Buffalo St.  No telescope is needed.  Meet at the large parking lot.

Compass Navigation 101, offered for FREE by NYSDEC at Mount Loretto Unique Area,  6450 Hylan Blvd. will take place Saturday at 1:30.  Insects of the Night is at 8:30 p.m.  These programs are for ages 9 and up but a parent or guardian must accompany children.  Space is limited and registration is required.  Call 718-482-6404 to register.

A Forest Restoration Workshop will take place Saturday at 10 at the Egbertville Ravine.  Meet at the intersection of Meisner Rd. and Rockland Ave. Call 718-768-9036 or 718-667-1393 for info.

On Saturday, from noon – 3 at South Beach, meet up with Kayak Staten Island, a group of volunteers who will help you learn to manipulate a kayak and get a view of Staten Island from the outside in. For more info, visit kayak-statenisland@gmail.com

This Saturday and Sunday, take advantage of pet adoptions.  There are so many cats and dogs looking for good homes.   For an opportunity to share your life with your new best friend, please visit:  http://www.silive.com/pets/index.ssf/2015/08/staten_island_pets_aug_13.html

Sunday, 8/16, at 11, join herbalist Gert Colemanto on a walk at the Conference House Park to identify wild herbs.  Meet in the parking lot at the southern end of Hylan Blvd. Call 718-984-6046 for info.

How many of you remember South Beach Amusement Park--the bumper cars, the kiddie roller coaster, the ferris wheel, skeet ball?  We kids would anxiously await summer and South Beach and the various church carnivals throughout Staten Island.  I visited Seaside Park this week with my family and watched my grandchildren’s amazed faces as they watched all the wild rides and barkers at the games of chance.  My childhood memories returned in an instant.  I hadn’t felt that excitement until I lived it through them. Check out the Staten Island Go-Karts in Castleton Corners between Manor Rd. and Slosson Terr.  Besides the ever exciting go-karts, you can play miniature golf, hit balls in the batting cage (my favorite) and enjoy the soon-to-be complete roller hockey rink. You don’t have to go to New Jersey to treat yourself and your family to some fun events.

The City Harvest Mobile Market is held twice a month on Tuesday from 9:30-11:30 at the Stapleton Houses courtyard behind 75 Hill St.  Fresh vegetables or fruit are distributed for FREE to all participants.  You must bring a photo ID, proof of address and live in zip codes, 10301, 10304, 10305, 10310 or be a member of the Stapleton Senior Center.  The Mobile Market is held at twice a month on Wednesday at the Mariners Harbor Houses, 22 Roxbury St. at 11:30 and at the Mariners Harbor Housing Community Center, 311 Grandview Ave. at 9:30.  You must live in zip codes are 10302, 10303 or 10314 and bring photo ID.

Did I list enough "singing" opportunities for this weekend? If you would like to share memories of summer or your "olden days" or photos of you on Staten Island, I will be happy to post them in my blog.  You can call me at 646-258-9696, leave a comment below or e-mail me at joan.coogan@gmail.com

I and a few friends made our way down to see the Saints in the City. I had seen them a few times over the past year. I had seen them at a show in NJ for the first time in a few months and thought they had a fill in. When I saw them at the neck they not only were not good but also unprofessional during the first song. I left after three songs. Disappointing!
