Veteran's Day falls on Tuesday, November 11th, but due to some local events and sponsorship by Borough President James Oddo this year, November should be called Veteran's Month here on Staten Island.
First, on November 5th, there will be a live convert event at the Old Bermuda Inn on Veterans Rd West in Rossville from 9am to 1pm. Award-winning singer/songwriter and U.S. Army Veteran Tim Maggart will headline the "New American Freedom Train Show." This 75-minute multimedia collaborative effort will feature 8 more artists, a state-of-the-art video production, and the help of the National Infantry Museum and Soldier Center and the National Civil War Naval Museum, both of Columbus, Georgia. Also on November 5th, Borough Hall will be presenting an opening reception for a new art show entitled "Veteran Art Now: A Retrospective of the American Veteran." The show will feature the works of veterans of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System, and it will run through December 3rd at Borough Hall in St. George during business hours.
On November 7th, the WorkForce1 Center on Stuyvesant Place will be holding a free workshop called "Acing the Interview." The class will focus on resume writing, job hunting tips, and the skills needed to master a job interview. All veterans and their spouses are welcome.
On November 14th, another free workshop will be hosted by the Department of Veterans' Affairs. This workshop will cover how to apply for benefits, how to use them properly, and other benefits issues and homeless services. There will also be a Q&A session after the class is finished, with opportunities for one-on-one support. The workshop will be held at Borough Hall in Room 122 from 10am to 2pm.
