I accompanied my grandson to a special St. Patrick’s Day event at the Tottenville Branch of the New York Public Library on Tuesday.  Miss Amy, one of my grandson’s favorite librarians, read a number of books that featured “green” themes.  After reading, the children sang songs and then watched as Miss Amy turned a stuffed caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly.  Each child was given a chance to open the Velcro caterpillar and observe the transformation.  They were enchanted!  Afterwards, there were arts and crafts to color, decorate with glitter, cut out and bring home.  I always have a grand time watching the children and seeing their faces light up when they participate in reading and programs.
Did you know there are activities and programs at the New…

My grandson, Gerard, ever the aficionado of prehistoric creatures, and at age 3, can pronounce the names of every dinosaur, is in for a treat!  “Dinosaur Encounters” debuted at the Staten Island Zoo yesterday.  Eight animatronic dinos will be at the Zoo for four months until April 1.  Triggered by motion detectors, the beasts move heads and tails and grunt and growl hoarsely.  The exhibit is free with regular admission.

Many of you have probably made vacation plans already.  Whether it be a cruise, a vacation to see family across the country, day trips, long weekends at the lake or shore, summer is an exciting time of the year.  Packing is easy--throw a bathing suit and suntan lotion into a tote and off to the beach you go.  Sit in a park, people watch, bring a bag lunch and a good book—mini-vacation.  There are so many possibilities and many that are FREE.  Activities abound around the City and particularly, on Staten Island for the summer.

The outdoor concerts at the parks are always a favorite of mine.  When I was a child, my Dad would pack the kids up and off to Silver Lake we would go.  He would spread a blanket in the grass, we would snack on fruit—grapes,…
