WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (3/20-3/22/15)

I accompanied my grandson to a special St. Patrick’s Day event at the Tottenville Branch of the New York Public Library on Tuesday. Miss Amy, one of my grandson’s favorite librarians, read a number of books that featured “green” themes. After reading, the children sang songs and then watched as Miss Amy turned a stuffed caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly. Each child was given a chance to open the Velcro caterpillar and observe the transformation. They were enchanted! Afterwards, there were arts and crafts to color, decorate with glitter, cut out and bring home. I always have a grand time watching the children and seeing their faces light up when they participate in reading and programs.

Friday, 3/20 and Saturday, 3/21 at 8, at the Staten Island Artists Building, 73 Wave St., attend Growing up on the Rock: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, an evening with Staten Island songwriters, comics, actors, poets and dancers as they confess and express life as they see it on Staten Island. Visit the Horrmann Library, Wagner College, One Campus Rd. to view "Up close: A Retrospective of Women Artists in Staten Island", honoring local women artists. Exhibit is FREE and open Sunday through Saturday 9-8 through 3/29.

Catch “Dan Master” with music from the 20’s and beyond on Friday at 7 and “Allergic to Bs” on Saturday at 6 and 8 at the Tavern Concert series at the Guyon Tavern, Historic Richmond Town, 441 Clarke Ave. Call 718-351-1611 for reservations.

On Friday at 6, at the College of Staten Island, 1P Recital Hall, 2800 Victory Blvd, view the screening of “Arise” as part of the Greenbelt’s Women Greening the Globe Series, celebrating women’s inspiring efforts towards creating sustainable communities. Call 718-982-2000 for further details.

Saturday, 3/21, at 8, a Jazz concert featuring “The Lady Bugs”, a traditional jazz vocal group will perform at the New Dorp Moravian Church, 2205 Richmond Rd. Call 718-350-0090 for tickets and reservations.

The Musical Chairs Chamber Ensemble Season 11 concert will be held at the Staten Island Museum, 75 Stuyvesant Pl. on Saturday at 8.

On Saturday at 1 at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore, 2245 Richmond Ave., attend a book signing of Bernard Whalen’s “The NYPD’s First Fifty Years: Politicians, Police Commissioners and Patrolmen”. The book begins with the official formation of the NYPD in 1898 through 50 years.

On Saturday, from 1-2, at Blue Heron Nature Center, 222 Poillon Ave., bring your children ages 5-7 to Kids & Kritters, a program that will include a craft, story or game indoors and a Spring hike. Call Nancy Zawada at 917-751-0071 for pre-registration.

Celebrate the first day of Spring with a nature walk at the Conference House Park, 298 Satterlee St. on Saturday from 9:30 – 11 and other events throughout the day and concluding with a look at the Night Sky and solar system.

Just a reminder--Staten Island teens and young adults, ages 14-24, can now apply for summer jobs through the 2015 Summer Youth Employment Program. This program will provide young people with PAID summer employment for up to six weeks during July and August in a variety of entry level jobs. Applicants must be able to provide working papers if under 18 as well as ID and documents.
