Did you donate an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots Drive at Edward Jones this week or sign up for FREE piping and drumming lessons at St. Albans with Richmond County Pipes and Drums or attend the SIMHS Touch-A-Truck Fundraiser?  Did you enjoy one of the last weeks of warm weather as I did, gaze at the remainder of the summer flowers, pick the runt-of-the litter cucumber hiding on the fence enjoy the scent of the beautiful rose on a chilly October day, wonder whether to  pick the melon? or squash? growing on my fence from the neighbor’s yard  or marvel at the caterpillars that return each year to the parsley plants, eat them all up and disappear mysteriously into the night as butterflies.  A new season is practically upon us; I suppose the time is right…

On Saturday, I attended the book signing of “The Dimension Travel Trilogy”, met the young author, Joseph S. Have you started putting your records together to file your taxes?  Do you need help? You can get Tax Prep assistance from AARP volunteers for FREE at the New York Public Library. For low and middle income taxpayers, with emphasis on Senior Citizens on a first come, first serve basis, help is available on Monday and Wednesday at 11 at West Brighton Library and Thursdays at 10 at the Todt-Hill Westerleigh Library.  At the St. George Library on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 2-6 you can receive help in preparing and filing your tax return electronically from a tax assistant at the St. George Library Center and Tuesday at 11 at Richmondtown Library. http://www.nypl.org/events/calendar

The Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the Staten Island Museum took place on Saturday. The Museum, situated in Building A, is grand with plenty of room to meander throughout the exhibits.  The Mastodon exhibit was a hit as well as the fossils on the first floor!  I loved the art, science and history exhibits.  The Autumn Moon Festival was entertaining with music performances, martial arts demos, dragons in the midst of the audience and a fashion show by the New York Chinese Qipao Association.

I hope you had a happy, healthy Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and enjoyed family and friends and maybe even started new traditions.  Maybe you volunteered by distributing presents to seniors at nursing homes or at hospitals in the pediatric units or served dinner at a community kitchen.  A group of my friends, who sing carols at Silver Lake Nursing Home each year, returned once again last Saturday.  Instead of singing only in the dining room, we visited the day room on each floor and were able to engage the residents in sing alongs.  I felt like we touched each resident, but, in reality, we were touched when many smiled, loudly sang along and thanked us when we left.  It took all I had to hold back the tears.
