Following are scenes from an evening ride through our North Shore neighborhoods.  The display of lights brightened the streets and, of course, my mood.  It must be so enjoyable walking your dog at night or just strolling after dinner to admire the handiwork of your neighbors. If you would like to share a photo of your special light display, please do not hesitate to snap and e-mail or text me.

Did any of you attend or participate in the Frank Sinatra Sound-A-Like Competition last Saturday?  Sam Levine, of Marlboro, NJ, took home first place and a $100 cash prize for his velvety take on "The Way You Look Tonight".  He commented that he has been listening to Sinatra with his dad since he was a teen.  In my family, Mom and Dad were always singing.  Mom liked the golden oldies of her time, Dad sang Cowboy songs.  Both had beautiful voices.  Us young’uns were into musicals and of course 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.  My brother sang in a band for many years so he sings everything!  I can still remember my older sister dancing around the living room as a teen singing, “I Feel Pretty” from West Side Story.  How many of you have heard a song and it brings you…

Did you go ice skating last weekend?  One of my readers reminisced how “life was much simpler in those days” as she ice skated on Brady’s Pond and Cameron Pond in Grasmere.  Another reader remembered skating on Allison Pond, “taking dates to the War Memorial Skating Rink at Clove Lakes” and also weekend skating with his children.  I remember having cold toes and warming up in front of bonfires at Martlings Pond with my older sister.  She had tried out for the Silver Skates competition and dazzled everyone with her figure eights all over the pond.  Do you have any memories you would like to share?

As I think of everything I am thankful for each day, I urge my readers to remember those in our lives who are in need of companionship, maybe a telephone…

BFC Partners, the developers of the upcoming Empire Outlets complex in St. George, are planning yet another big project in Stapleton.

The new building will be located at 475 Bay Street, a few short blocks away from the Stapleton train station. Of the proposed eight floors, the first will contain almost 9,000 square feet of retail space, and floors 2 through 8 will contain 214 residential units. The building will also have its own enclosed parking lot. Permit applications were filed Monday morning, along with zoning change requests. The current zone codes do not allow the space to be used for residential purposes, but only for light manufacturing and commercial use.

Did you ever wonder who lived in your house before you, or maybe before the last owner or 5 or 10 owners before that?  Was it merely a house or was it a home?  Did they have many children, were they educated in a one-room school house or taught by a tutor at home?  Were they rich, poor?  Did they have servants?  Did they have a farm, horses, chickens, cows?  What kind of "real estate" was trendy and sought after in those days of yore?

I own a home on the North Shore of Staten Island where three generations of my own family have lived, died, been born, had Thanksgiving dinners, opened gifts under the Christmas tree, laughed, cried--all in these very rooms.  The fourth generation was born and a sibling on the way, and I cannot wait to share the…
