DEADLINE IS TOMORROW, 10/16!  Open to all youth who worked this summer through the NYC SYEP—Summer Youth Employment Program and are currently in school, internships are available through the New School Year Employment Program.  Applicants must be enrolled in high school or college and be between the ages of 14 and 24.  United Activities Unlimited will administer the program and provide internships in various partnered businesses in Staten Island, Manhattan and Brooklyn.  Applications can be completed online at http://www.nyc.gov/html/dycd/html/jobs/jobs.shtml and deadline for submission is Friday, 10/16.  Call Brian Licata at UAU at 718-987-8111 for questions and info.

The Staten Island Children’s Museum is accepting nominations for the 24th annual Kid of Achievement Award.  The award, which acknowledges the hard work of an 11 to 18 year old whose volunteerism has made a difference in the community, comes with a $100 honorarium and a framed certificate that is bestowed at the museum’s Circle of Friends business luncheon on 11/12 at the Hilton Garden Inn. Nominations must be received no later than Oct. 26 and should include the nominee's name, and a brief description of their accomplishments. The Department of Education has begun accepting registration from families seeking to have their child take the Gifted and Talented exam.  The deadline to register for testing is November 9. As kids, we would transform our already spooky unfinished basement into a Spook House during October and charge the neighborhood kids to be a part of our extravaganza.  My oldest sister, Ellen, was the imaginative and industrious one in the family; the rest of us played along.  We also had Chinese Auctions in our basement, getting rid of toys and having “how many marbles in a jar” contests.  Again, the neighborhood kids paid to win our old toys and hang out with us. We had so much fun--thanks Ellen for the memories!  Well, you can participate in the annual Fright Night Festival at the Church of St. Andrew at 40 Old Mill Rd. on Saturday from 7-9:30.  Call 718-351-0900 for ticket info.  Sounds like a scary and fun evening for all! 

Visit the CPG Gallery (Creative Photographer’s Guild), 814 Richmond Terr. on Saturday and Sunday from 1-5 through 11/15 for “Vivid” exhibition. The Reformed Church of Huguenot Park, 5475 Amboy Rd. will feature their Harvest Fair on Saturday from 10-3 with activities for all ages as well as guided tours of the 167-year old church.  Staten Island Animal Care will be present with dogs and cats available for immediate adoption.  Bring ID and proof of residence is needed.  

On Sunday, 10/18 at 3 join Staten Island OutLOUD for bilingual (Spanish-English) readings from “The Great Gatsby” at El Centro Del Immigrante, 1546 Castleton Ave. They will also feature some family-friendly readings for the little ones.

You can take your family Pumpkin Picking every weekend in October from 11-4 at the historic 1800’s Decker Farm, 435 Richmond Hill Rd.  Take a farmhouse tour, enjoy a hayride, get lost in the cornstalk maze, take part in arts and crafts and bring home a pumpkin.  Free shuttle bus service from Historic Richmond Town parking lot to the Farm.  Admission is $6 for Adults and children over 1 or a $20 Family Four Pack.  For info, visit http://www.historicrichmondtown.org/decker-farm
