I personally witnessed, along with many other hardy (and hearty) folks, Staten Island Chuck, our favorite prognosticator, predict an early Spring, on a damp, cold Sunday morning 02/02/2020—the first global palindrome day in 909 years!  I’m thrilled that warmer weather is coming soon.  As for the palindrome day, we won’t experience this unique phenomenon for another 101 years on 12/12/2121. That’s a fact!  Following are some photos from the event.

Awhile ago, I told you about meeting Mona Oman, a commercial artist and mother of two, beautifying the side of a building on Henderson and Davis Avenues.  As soon as those rare, odd winter days in the 50’s surprised us, Mona would seize the day, arrange her paints and carry on with her…

Did you take advantage of the free mammograms and breast cancer screenings last week? If not, call State Sen. Andrew Lanza’s office at 800-564-6868 for an appointment that will continue throughout the year. The Zimmer Club Free Youth Winter Program should be on your to-do list for your children under the age of 18. Check out their site info@aezyouth.com; get your kids away from their electronic devices, out of the house and into fresh air with these exciting programs. They will thank you later. Did you attend Direct Connect with Borough Hall on Sunday for a meet and greet with our Borough President James Oddo and his staff or welcome in the Year of the Rat: Lunar New Year events with Staten Island OutLOUD at the Greenbelt Nature Center or at Snug Harbor…

From 69 degrees last week to the 20’s this week doesn’t sit right with this summer baby. Oh, well, Winter is here; we have to grin and make the best of it!

What did you do this week—shovel snow, make batches of hot, healthy soup, bake cookies? Try your hand at Adult Canvas Painting at the Dongan Hills Library, Adult Painting Class at the Beacon Community Center at IS49, attended Prompted: A Creative Writing Session at the Todt Hill-Westerleigh Library, learned about Winter Survival Skills from the Greenbelt educators or joined Matt Falber as he presented “Frederick Law Olmsted—From Pear Trees to Parks” at the St. George Library.

Did you enjoy the two days of balmy spring-like weather this past weekend? I took advantage of it by strolling through Snug Harbor with my friend, Joe, and taking in the sights and sounds. As we enjoyed “people watching”, we came upon a guitarist playing tunes, an art class of youngsters observing turtles as they went up and down a ramp and other models to sketch, people walking dogs, dogs escaping from their people (and appearing at my side!?) and sunshine during this temporary break in temps.

On Saturday, I attended the Staten Island OutLOUD’s series on historian Nathaniel Philbrick’s “In the Heart of the Sea”, and more particularly, African American Mariners: Unsung Strivers, at the Frederick Douglass Memorial Park at…

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020!! Did you get to beat pots and pans outside at the strike of midnight? For as long as I can remember from childhood through adulthood, whenever we had a New Year's party at  home, it was our family tradition to stand on the porch and bang pots and pans, cow bells and/or other noisemakers to welcome in the new year.  We could hear all the boats in the Kill Van Kull sounding their horns in unison as we listened to fireworks going off all around the neighborhood. What are your New Year traditions?  Please feel free to share.

Thank you, my gentle reader, Dorcas, for sharing photos from the Kwanzaa Celebration which was hosted by the African American Community in collaboration with the JCC Beacon Program at JHS 49 on Friday.

Did you take a hike as my gentle reader, Diane, did last week? There are plenty of organized hikes each week, but you can always take a friend or pup and go off on your own and discover new wonderful places to get lost in nature. See this week’s choices below. A number of Christmas/Holiday Fairs took place this past week and many more will follow (see schedule at end of blog). I attended a fair at Holy Family Church Hall. So many talented artisans displayed their wares for sale.  I met friends I had not seen in years and made new ones including a couple of proud Veterans. Following are photos from this event:

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. I applaud all my readers and friends who walked in and donated to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk fundraiser.  Breast cancer is one of the most common kinds of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. The good news is that most women can survive breast cancer if it is found and treated early. A mammogram, the screening test for breast cancer, can help find breast cancer early when it is easier to treat.  Men can get breast cancer, too–over 2,000 men are diagnosed each year. Learn more about male breast cancer: https://bit.ly/2r9nisQ  A mobile clinic, Project Renewal ScanVan, is offering free mammograms and breast exams to women ages 40+ on

A few weeks ago, I took the long way home from the South Shore and arrived at one of the most beautifully-kept parks on Staten Island--Corporal Allan F. Kivlehan Park. I parked the car on New Dorp Ln. and walked to the end. I climbed the dunes, spotted fishermen at the…
