Friday, 6/5 at 8, attend Staten Island’s Poetry Slam & Open Mic hosted by its only literary arts organization at Richmond Hood Company, 821 Castleton Ave.  The winner of the competition gets glory and local acclaim as well as a bag of swagger!  This sounds like a lot of fun!!

In honor of National Police Week, three businessmen, Bob Cutrona, Sal Sottile and Jerry Amerosi, will host an event to show honor and support to our police officers, as well as fallen officers on Saturday, 6/6 at 8:30 a.m.  Clergymen from various religions will be there for prayers and hymns in memory of the recently slain officers, Brian Moore, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu.  The NYPD tribute will take place at the Staten Island Mall parking lot on the Richmond Avenue side near Burger King.

Saturday, 6/6 from 9-3, join your friends at the Spring Flea Market and Fair at Christ Church, 76 Franklin Ave. 

Saturday at 2:30 at the St. George Library, 5 Central Ave., enjoy a FREE bluegrass concert brought to you by banjo player Doug Dicolaisen, bass player Allen Cohen, Mark Farrell and Bill Christophersen on guitar, mandolin and fiddle. 

CPG Gallery, 814 Richmond Terrace, on Saturday and Sunday, 6/6 and 6/7, the featured photographer Richard Xuereb will exhibit from 1-5.  Exhibiting photographers will display their work thru June 28. 

FREE Family Fun Day is on Saturday from noon-5!  Sponsored by the South Shore BID, it takes place at three locations:  Richmond County Savings Bank, 820 Annadale Rd. and RCSB, 4523 Amboy Rd., and at the Great Kills Train Station at Brower Ct.  Brought to you by Councilman Vincent Ignizio, Richmond County Savings Foundation and SIEDC, this event will feature music, bouncy houses, food and more.  

Saturday, from noon-3, the West New Brighton Public Library, 975 Castleton Ave. is holding a FREE outdoor event to reintroduce library services to the community.  Enjoy educational and artistic programs that inform about resources in the area.  Food and refreshments will be provided.

The Staten Island Bicycle Association will sponsor a Bike Ride on Saturday starting at 8:30 a.m. at Miller Field, New Dorp Lane and Mill Road.  Participants must be 18 and over and should be able to ride at a minimum of 10 miles per hour. 

If you have your dancing shoes shined up and ready to go, check out The Originals at the Old Bermuda Inn at 2512 Arthur Kill Rd. on Saturday at 8 for a night of Dancing.  FREE if you are a dining guest, $13 cover if not, but includes one complimentary drink.

You can also shine those boots up and go Country Line Dancing with Loren Utt at Pepperjack Grill, 316 Manor Rd. on Saturday at 9. 

Sunday from 11-3, enjoy Discovery Day at Fresh Kills Park featuring free kayaking, bicycles rides through the trails and a nature hike near the creek.  Shuttles into the site will run continuously from parking at Wild Ave. and at the St. George Ferry Terminal.

Staten Island OutLOUD presents “The Conference of the Birds”, a spoken word performance of the 16th century Persian classic with original choreography and dance performance by Melissa West and music by Tom Bones.  FREE at the Greenbelt Nature Center, 700 Rockland Ave., Sunday at 2:30.  Registration preferred; call 718-351-3450.

Sunday, 6/7 from noon-5, SIABC, 73 Wave St. will sponsor a fund raiser for Staten Island Hope Animal Rescue. Unique artwork and photography from local artists will be raffled off, gift baskets, 50/50, refreshments and snacks will be available.  Petco will be at the event with free giveaways and information on adoptions.
