Attend Tottenville Library’s Advanced Microsoft Word 2010 class for adults where you will learn advanced features such as mail merge, tables, text boxes, headers, footers, footnotes and endnotes. Class is on Wednesday, 9/26 at 11 at 7340 Amboy Rd.

For ages 5-12, the St. George Library Center, 5 Central Ave. hosts STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) Wednesday at 3:30.  This fun learning experience begins with a short read aloud followed by either hands-on science experiments, engineering challenges or technology tinkering. No registration required. This program will be held in the Auditorium.

On Wednesday at 4, bring your family to Literacy INC’s program with a reading from a special guest at the West New Brighton Library, 976 Castleton Ave.  Snacks and an activity will take place afterward. All ages welcome, no registration required.

All children and parents are welcome to attend the Anti-Bully Support Workshop at the Rossville A.M.E. Zion Church, 584 Bloomingdale Rd. on Wednesday from 4-6.  This workshop is for children/teens experiencing any type of bullying (in-school, cyber-bullying, food allergy, etc.) and parents looking for resources. On Thursday, 9/27 at 11, the Great Kills Library at 56 Giffords Ln. will have a Workforce 1 Hiring Event. Many jobs on Staten Island are now available--come and find out what they are! Please attend this recruitment event to be considered for employment opportunities.

Attend the Family Finger Painting: Fall Tree on Thursday at 4 at the South Beach Library, 21-25 Robin Rd.  This new sensory art program is for the little ones, the older ones, the ENTIRE family! Finger painting is a simple activity that is designed to inspire participants to think about and respond creatively to art and the world around them.  Come once every month for a new design project!

On Thursday at 6:30 at P.S. 58, 77 Marsh Ave., the city-appointed Property Tax Commission will hold a Public Meeting regarding the inequity in the NYC property tax system, especially to Staten Islanders. For the next year, the Commission will hold 10 public hearings for city residents and compile recommendations for city officials on how to make the system fair.  Please attend this hearing, whether you are renting or a property owner--skyrocketing real estate taxes affect each of you!

The hustle and bustle of everyday life can be tough and stressful on the mind. Escape the stress during a guided Meditation Hour at the Mariners Harbor Library, 206 South Ave. on Friday, 9/28 at 3. Meditation can help quiet the mind or help you embark on your own spiritual journey. Come in comfortable clothing.

Join the Walk to End Alzheimers on Saturday 9/29 at 9 at the College of Staten Island, 2800 Victory Blvd. Participants will complete a 2-mile walk and learn about Alzheimer’s disease, advocacy opportunities and support services from the Alzheimer’s Association. Participants are invited to take part in a ceremony to honor those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, as well as enjoy a team photo booth, Kids Zone, and more! Did you try kayaking this summer? Now is your chance to experience Basic Canoeing on Saturday from 11-12:30 at Willowbrook Park,1 Eton Pl. Trained Urban Park Rangers will lead you on canoe adventures that range from the gentle waters of protected lakes to the challenging open waters of rivers and bays. Participation in a mandatory safety review led by a trained Ranger is required. Bring your family to the Family Emergency Preparedness Festival on Saturday from 12-5 at the SI Children's Museum,1000 Richmond Terr.  Meet emergency responders and check out their vehicles and equipment. Meet “Ready Girl” and receive a free collector’s edition comic book and other giveaways, while supplies last.

The 3rd Annual Lighthouse Point Fest will be held on Saturday from 12-6 at the National Lighthouse Museum, 200 The Promenade.  Arts and crafts, vendors, live music, food vendors will be available. The Water Front Fest’s Legendary Lighthouse Soup Contest will be from 12-2. Soups will represent a Lighthouse from anywhere in the world. Contestants will be vying for the “People’s Choice Trophy.” Suggested entrance Fest donation for the Museum is $3.00 per person; children 12 and under are free. FREE Tai Chi exercises will be taught by Natasha Spearman-Islip on Saturday at 1 at the Richmond Terrace Therapeutic Garden, 456 Richmond Terr. This exercise is great for all, especially seniors.

This is the last week to submit photos of you and your pet! The 2nd Annual “Protecting Our Pets" calendar photo contest was announced by D.A. Mike McMahon.  The calendar encourages S.I. residents to showcase the love they have for their animals while also raising awareness against animal abuse.  Send in a high resolution photo, preferably a picture of the pet with the owner to 130 Stuyvesant Pl. S.I., NY 10301, Attn: Community Partnership Unit.  Multiple submissions will not be considered. All entries must include the pet owner’s name, pet’s name, age, owner’s address, email and phone number. The photo may also be emailed to contest@rcda.nyc.gov  The contest ends Monday, 10/1.
