WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (4/26 – 5/1/17)

Posted by Joan Coogan on Tuesday, April 25th, 2017 at 11:03pm

Did you attend the Stapleton Library session last Wednesday, “Growing Healthy Eaters”?  This is a 6-session series to educate young children and their caregivers about the importance of eating well through a series of interactive, entertaining and delicious sessions.  Visit the Library at 132 Canal St. or call 718-727-0427 to attend on Wednesday at 4 and for more info.

Staten Island is a great place to grow vegetables, and the presentation by Jay Weichun "Growing Food on Staten Island" yesterday at the College of Staten Island was proof.  He spent five years documenting and interviewing home gardeners from different backgrounds and nationalities throughout the Island. Convinced that home vegetable gardens are a means of understanding Staten Island and its people, Weichun videotaped more than 28 gardeners. This event was sponsored by the Greener Library Committee of the College of Staten Island Library, which promotes greater awareness of environmental issues.  The one common thread seen in these interviews was that these gardeners loved working hard on their gardens, loved watching their vegetables grow and loved sharing the fruits of their labor with friends, family and neighbors. Visit the site: http://www.growingfoodonstatenisland.com/

How are your seedlings doing on your window sill garden?  When is the right time to move them outside? Are you searching for the perfect annuals, perennials, shrubs for your garden?  Care to share what vegetables you will plant?

The lilacs in my garden are permeating the air, the mint and sage are abundant, a new rose bush that was planted two years ago has grown, the apple blossoms have arrived, the pansies are showing their pretty colors, the tulips are still alive and pretty, and I cannot wait to begin to prepare my soil and choose veggies to plant.  It’s time to become one with nature and welcome the warmer weather.
