WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (7/15 – 7/19/15)

Thanks to all our friends/customers/clients for stopping by at the Gillani Homes booth at “Back to the Beach” on Saturday and Sunday!  The bands played at both ends, there were many booths and many new attractions.  I had a blast making new friends.  One of my gentle readers and a friend, Susan, crossed off the Family Camping Staten Island from her bucket list.  She had a great time but was uncomfortable sleeping on rocks!  How did those cowboys do it on the range?  How do you “campers” keep comfortable in your sleeping bags?  Any hints would be appreciated. You still have time to get in on the adventure.  Visit: www.nyc.gov/parks/rangers/register.

I want to congratulate the Liedy family and Liedy’s Shore Inn, 748 Richmond Terrace, New Brighton, on its 110th anniversary.  How does a business stay alive and vibrant after 110 years?  The Liedy family can best let you know their tricks of the trade.  I can personally attest that Larry Liedy, the proprietor, who I have known since 1st grade, is one of a kind!  Stop by and say “hi” and “congrats”.

City pools are open through 8/28 from 11-3 and 4-7 seven days a week.  Adult lap swim takes place from 7-8:30 a.m. and 7-8:30 p.m.  Following is a list of Island pools:

Faber Pool, Faber St. and Richmond Terr., Port Richmond

Lyons Pool, Pier 6 and Victory Blvd. Tompkinsville

Tottenville Pool, Hylan Blvd. and Joline Ave.

West Brighton Pool, Henderson Ave. between Broadway and Chappel St.

You can visit the following mini-pools at:

General Douglas Pool, Jefferson St. and Seaver Ave., Dongan Hills

Mariners Harbor Playground Pool, Grandview Ave. and Continental Pl.

PS 14 Playground Pool, Tompkins Ave. between Hill and Broad St., Stapleton

PS 46 Playground Pool, Parkinson Ave. and Kramer St., South Beach

On Facebook recently, one of my grade school friends commented that every day we kids would walk to Tompkinsville (or Lyons) Pool--1.3 miles according to Mapquest!  We all lived 5 minutes from Goodhue Pool but enjoyed Tompkinsville probably because it was larger, had a baby pool for our younger siblings and roomier changing rooms.  We never took buses or were driven.  On a regular day, we walked miles to Stapleton to shop at the various stores or to any of the parks or food shopping for our parents.  Do your children WALK!?  I would love to know.

Do you sometimes sense that no one knows how you feel, how much pain you are in, how you suffer from maladies or afflictions that are invisible to others?  On Staten Island, you can read your local newspaper, the Staten Island Advance or online to find a group where you will meet others like you, others who can support you and make you realize you are not alone.

Thursday, 7/16, 7, don’t miss the Borough President’s FREE Summer Concert Series at Lemon Creek Park, Seguine Ave. and Johnston Terr. featuring  my friend, Vinnie Medugno and Charlie Poveromo performing all your favorite classics from the 40’s to the 70’s.  The weather will be great, bring your chair, your blanket, your snacks and enjoy the evening.  See you there!

Thursday, 1, join the Protectors of Pine Oak Woods walk to discover the Dragonflies.  Bring your binoculars and meet at the Blue Heron Nature Center, 222 Poillon Ave.

Saturday, 7/18, 9-5, attend Harmony Day, at Corporal Thompson Park, Broadway and Henderson Ave. West Brighton. It’s a full day of fun, achievement award recognition, tournaments, games, free giveaways, music, fire safety awareness, health care screenings, NYPD Explorers Recruitment, dance/step competitions and much more. There is something for everyone at Harmony Day!

On Sunday, 7/19 from 12-6, the North Shore Business Association will present FEASTival at Nick Laporte Pl., Tompkinsville, featuring food from local restaurants and food trucks.  Entertainment will include acoustic music, dancers, magicians and art presentations.
