WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (9/26-28)

Facing a Nor’easter today and summer-like weather tomorrow, it looks like another great weekend to enjoy the happenings on Staten Island.  How many of you went on the North Shore Restaurant Crawl last weekend?  I sampled food in 14 different restaurants, got my two miles of walking in and met a lot of nice people—both fellow foodies and owners/managers of the restaurants.  Congratulations to the North Shore Business Association for sponsoring this event!  It was a success!

The Egyptian Festival at Archangel Michael and St. Mena Coptic Church at 4095 Amboy Rd. will be held for two weekends, 9/27 and 9/28 and 10/4 and 10/5 from noon to 8:00 p.m.  FREE ADMISSION!  The parishioners welcome you with open arms to share and learn the rich culture of the Coptic community.  Visitors will experience everything Egyptian through clothing, food, people and culture.  Enjoy the Mediterranean dishes--stuffed grape leaves, shish kebab, baklava and more.  Various Egyptian goods will also be on sale. There will be plenty of activities for kids, including rides and games. And for $5, you can have your car washed!  I visited this church many years ago on real estate business and have attended the festival ever since.  Taste the great food, mingle with the parishioners, make new friends and have a wonderful time!

On Saturday 9/27 from 1-3:00 p.m., the Protectors of Pine Oaks Woods is sponsoring a stroll through the woodlands of Reed’s Basket Willow Park and visit to three bodies of water where you will see a wide variety of flora and fauna.  Clay Wollney will meet you at the park entrance on the top of Spring Street off of Richmond Road in Dongan Hills.

“Picnic”, the Pulitzer prize winning William Inge drama about a small town, some lonely women and a well-built and accommodating dreamboat will play for two weekends beginning 9/26 by Sea View Playwright’s Theater at Chapel Theater on the grounds of Seaview Home and Hospital at 460 Brielle Ave.

Do any of you remember Hopscotch, Red Light-Green Light 1, 2, 3, Red Rover, Double-Dutch?  I fondly remember playing on the streets with my friends for many hours until it was time for dinner or it became dark outside.  On Saturday, 9/27, from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m., the Historic Tappen Park Community Partnership, in conjunction with NYC Parks & Recreation, State Senator Diane Savino, 120 Police Precinct and HealthPlus will host “Street Games” in Tappen Park.  Each child will have an opportunity to participate in games of their choice.  Giveaways and prizes will be distributed to every child.  There will also be Tai Chi lessons for those interested in learning basic techniques and movements.

Who doesn’t remember the “General Lee”, made famous by those adorable Duke Boys from the “Dukes of Hazzard” or “KITT” from the "Knight Rider" or the “Batmobile”?  On 9/27, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., you will get a chance to see the above-mentioned together with many more famous cars at theMovie Car Show” at Soundsation, 2311 Forest Avenue.  There will be giveaways, souvenirs, various raffles and photos of the cars for sale.

Meet the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York at Great Kills Park on Saturday 9/27 at 8:00 p.m. for Star Gazing in the large parking lot to the left where the playground is.  Telescopes will be provided.

Get yourself, your friends and/or your kids out of the house this weekend, away from TV’s and computers.  Try out some of these events. Let me know what you did this weekend. Call me at 646-258-9696 or write me below or at joan.coogan@gmail.com
