Staten Island has been coined “The Forgotten Borough” by many, including its own residents. However, in the past few months it seems the retail world was reminded just how worthy the Island is. Developers are making investments here to bring shopping and attractions to our shores. With so many up and coming additions to a variety of neighborhoods, it’s most assuredly a borough to be remembered! Here are some of the new attractions that make Staten Island worthy of your investment.
Grocery shopping can be one of the most daunting tasks of the month especially for those who live in underserved areas of the Island. As these neighborhoods expand, so does the need for conveniently located markets. Shopping has become easier for hundreds of Islanders with the addition of four new Key Food locations: South Beach, Port Richmond, Saint George, and Arden Heights. Key Food joins New York City’s FRESH movement which aims to bring fresh fruits, vegetables, and other healthy choices to Staten Island communities.
Adding to the lifestyle of staying fit and FRESH on Staten Island is L.A. Fitness, slated to open its brand new facility in Greenridge Shopping Plaza at Richmond Avenue and Arthur Kill Road. The plaza serves almost 350,000 residents and is a go to shopping destination for Great Kills, Eltingville, and Annadale residents. The new L.A .Fitness location will feature a swimming pool and a baby sitting area for the children of members. A variety of over 50 classes will be offered at the facility in addition to state of the art cardio equipment, free weights, and circuit training machines.
Perhaps the most anticipated addition to the retail market on Staten Island is a brand new 142,000 sq. ft. Target location coming to New Springville. Located in the Richmond Avenue shopping plaza, a highly frequented area for Staten Island Shoppers, this Target store will serve hundreds of thousands across several different neighborhoods. With the addition of Target, opening October 2013, the plaza has gone through an extensive facelift and brought even more shopping options. Old Navy has since relocated here from The Staten Island Mall. All that shopping can work up quite a big appetite. Five Guys Burgers and Fries, which opened in August, 2012 and Miller’s Ale house (Opening late October) join the plaza bringing new dining options to hungry patrons. This Target location will employ over 300 people and give back to the community through school fund raising programs. Last year, Saint Charles School in New Dorp was awarded $10,000 dollars worth of Target Gift cards.
As Staten Island continues to grow and develop, it’s no secret that its value for home owners increases as well. It has become New York City’s best area to own real estate. With each new addition to the retail market everyday life becomes more and more convenient for the island’s residents. Â
