I pray that you, my gentle readers, enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday. Did you take any hikes this week, especially the after-Thanksgiving or Black Friday hikes to counteract overeating or over imbibing? The Winter Wilderness Survival in Von Briesen Park with the Urban Park Rangers sounded like a fun family event. Did you attend any of the Tree Lighting ceremonies or Shop Small and Local on Small Business Saturday?

Did you participate in any of the many Halloween activities on Staten Island with your children or attend All About Bats at Bloomingdale Park? I always loved getting dressed up for Halloween as a kid (never store bought, always old clothes from Mom or Dad turned into a costume), and I always love seeing houses decorated for the season. A few houses I have passed lately are displays of death, horror--chillingly grotesque. Is this what Halloween has become? Are we so immune to horror that we want to add it our every day lives? Have you participated in any of the hikes throughout Staten Island’s parks or attended an open house for summer camps or schools for your children?  If you would like to share photos from any of the events you attended, please feel free to email them to me and I will include in this week’s blog. 

I love to see the snow melting and the green tops of plants popping out of the wet soil.  Now is the time to start planting seeds on your window sill to ready them for your garden when the last freeze is over.  As I write this, the weather is expected to go up to 50.  My kitty actually insisted on going outside to bask in the sun.  Is Mother Nature teasing me?  Time will tell.

YES, SPRING IS ON ITS WAY!  We have had ice, sleet, snow the last couple of days and weeks but also weather in the high 40’s.  Not your typical winter, I know, but it gives us some hope of warmth in the near future.  Of course, the other surprise was a quick snow storm which gave my grandkiddies a chance to shovel snow with their Dad and build a snowman.  See also the photos of the crocuses popping up all over and other signs of spring.
