On Saturday, I attended the Mass to celebrate the feast day of St. Anthony at the very beautiful St. Anthony of Padua Church in Travis.  Some of my gentle readers were in attendance, and I made some new friends.  The special "St. Anthony's Bread" was distributed during the service and also to the neighbors along the streets.  A band played music through the Travis neighborhood after the celebration as the procession was led by parishioners holding the photo of St. Anthony and others carrying a large statue of St. Anthony draped in dollar bills. The good parishioners hosted a reception thereafter while the band entertained us all.

I hope you enjoyed the photos that my gentle readers shared last week of their mothers.  If you wish to send in a photo, I will post any and all of them.  This week, I took a long road trip with my son, daughter-in-law and two precious grandchildren.  It was trying at times and  filled with activity, but I was glad to spend four entire days with my loved ones.  I was also amazed how the parents were able to get the kiddies washed, dressed, fed and on the road to each of the events we attended without much ado.  Wow! Was I ever that good?  Kudos to Jeff and Divonne on their excellent parenting skills!

The Tax gods have given you procrastinators a break!  April 18 is the new deadline this year to file your taxes.  If you are like me, I wait until the last second to file if I owe taxes.  I file immediately if I’m getting a refund.  Good luck!

The year seems to be passing me by with a t-shirt-weather teaser for a week, then a brisk chill, then the threat of snow last weekend (which did not occur on my part of Staten Island at least) and now my lawn looks like a jungle because of all the rain the past number of days.  Will Spring finally arrive this week?

Please bear with me as I remind you once more:  Start making plans for your children and teens for the summer months.  Consider applying for the 2016 Summer Youth Employment Program. Contact DYCD…

Were you able to check out the New York Public Library in your neighborhood or online this week?  Have you thought about discovering the history of your home and/or neighborhood?  Perhaps you might attend a program presented by The Preservation League of Staten Island or go on a tour of historic homes and districts of Staten Island.  Below you will find a program on Sunday, 3/13.  Visit their site for information, membership and more: http://preservestatenisland.org/index.htm

If you participated in the Recycle@GrownNYC.org Stop ‘N’ Swap event at Christ Church on Saturday, then you will agree it was a great success. Swarms of people were dropping off bags before 11 a.m.  The organizers had their hands full with weighing, organizing and setting up…

I hope you took advantage of the FREE health screenings at Go Red for Women: Heart Stoppers last Wednesday at the Regina McGinn Education Center.  Many of us only go to the doctor when we are sick. We’re treated and quickly forget about health issues until the next time an ailment arises.  Many years ago, I worked in the Medical Dept. of a large insurance company.  Every year, each employee had a full blood work-up, physical exam, dental check up and cleaning, PAP, mammography, counseling, chest X-rays, colonoscopies and more.  When I recall the benefits we were afforded, how could one not stay healthy?  Instead of taking the day off when you weren't feeling up to par, you visited the Medical Dept.  If your blood pressure was abnormal, you were checked…

I finally saw the new “Star Wars” movie in 3D.  This 3D technology has become so vivid and life like—all the trailers for the coming attractions, even the animated movies, were also in 3D.  Years ago, when I watched action/adventure movies like “Star Wars” and “Lord of the Rings”, it was exciting.  Now I feel like I am part of the action. Will the next type movie be “virtual” with vibrating chairs and surround sound as in the theme parks?

Did you start cleaning out your basement and attic of old electronics for the electronic waste recycling event?  Don’t forget that you can drop off at the Sanitation Department’s site every Saturday and the last Friday of the month at 100 West Service Rd. from 10-5.

So, how did you do on the roads at the new 25 mph speed limit?  I admit it has been a challenging week.  As soon as I start accelerating, I remember I must slow down.  I encountered a few police cars here and there (one in the Snug Harbor driveway on Henderson Ave.) and decelerated.  Not too obvious, right?  Also, I’m wondering if all the drivers behind me know about the slower speed limit.  More than a few have zipped past me frustrated that I was a slow poke.

The Harbor Lights Theater Company’s production of the iconic and one of my favorites, “West Side Story” continues Friday, 11/14 and runs through 11/16 and next weekend in the Music Hall at Snug Harbor.  Also offered is a Dinner/Brunch/Theater special.  Call 718-273-7516 or visit HLTC.org for…
