Spring is busting out all over!  Just praying whatever flower blooming this week in my garden doesn’t get covered by a surprise snow storm or a bomb cyclone!  I took a stroll through Snug Harbor and spotted a sad looking turtle on a block of wood hesitating to go into the murky green water of the pond.  Two ducks were hanging out in the water but did not look too alive or excited to be there.

Did you register your child for the Zimmer Club’s 2019 Winter Youth, accompany your teen to the Staten Island NAACP 9th Annual HBCU Experience College Fair 2019, enroll in one of the classes at Staten Island MakerSpace or attend the Exhibit Opening of the “Sons and Daughters of Italy: The Fashions and Faces of the Regions of Italy” at the Garibaldi-Meuicci Museum?  

Whatever you did, after the extremely low temperatures rose to 29 degrees, did you feel like you were warm again?  I actually wore long-johns to warm these old bones last week--something I haven't done in many years.  It was a relief for a brief moment as we anticipate snow, ice, etc. this week!

Did you take the guided walk through Jones Woods with Naturalist, John Kilcullen. The 17-acre wooded property is one of the latest additions to the NYC Parks Department nature walks and a pleasure to explore.  Did you visit other parks, like the Pink Park, or Silver Lake, Snug Harbor, Skyline Park, Bloomingdale Park, Fort Wadsworth?  Feel free to share some pictures with my Gentle Readers if you would like.  I know there are always new parks to explore, playgrounds to hang out with your children or grandchildren. Did you sign up for the Go!Healthy box on Friday?  Last week, we received peaches, swiss chard, red onions, basil, yellow squash, zucchini, cilantro and bicolor sweet corn.  All the produce is fresh and ready to eat. Purchase a food box at Goodhue Center, 304 Prospect Ave. Tuesdays between 4-6.  You must sign up a week in advance.  The Summer session runs from through 8/14, the Fall session runs from 9/11-11/13.  Each box costs $10 or $8 if you pay using EBT.  Cash, Credit/Debit, EBT and Health Bucks are accepted!

Have you been to Boogie Woogie Wednesdays at 5 at the Children’s Museum, 1000 Richmond Terr.?  Storytime and crafts begin at 5:30, snacks at 6:30 and dancing kicks of at 7 for all ages.  The summer goes by so fast so enjoy a night out with your kiddies doing something fun!

Join CloseKnit, the longest-running public program, on Thursday from 2-4 at Noble Maritime Collection, 1000 Richmond Terr.  It is FREE and open to knitters of all skill levels. The goods that members make are donated to community charities including the The Seamen’s Church Institute’s Christmas at Sea program and the Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless.

Do your children ages 5-12 have a love of Reading? Come to the Richmondtown Library,  200 Clarke Ave, on Thursday at 4, for a Read in at the Library where they will discuss their favorite book. Children will create a poster to celebrate reading. All supplies are provided.

The Borough President’s FREE Sunset Summer Concert Series continue on Thursday at 7 at Wolfe’s Pond Park, Cornelia Ave. & Chester Ave. featuring Echoes of Time and The Dreamers. Grab a blanket or chair and meet friends for a fun evening under the stars.  Read my “Weekend Events” next week for the line-up throughout Staten Island. 

The "A Wrinkle in Time" will be shown at Clove Lakes Park, 626 Clove Rd.. on Friday, 8/3 at 8:30. "Race" will be shown on Friday at 8:30 at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex, 625 Father Capodanno Blvd. Outside food/drink are permitted. Open to children ages 7-14, attend Healthfirst & Staten Island Yankees FREE Baseball Clinic on Saturday from 10-12 at the Richmond County Bank Ball Park, 75 Richmond Terr.  Learn the game from Staten Island Yankees players, play on the stadium field, learn how to field, run, throw, stretch and prevent injuries.  BRING YOUR BASEBALL GLOVE AND EQUIPMENT.  Space is limited and participation is on a first come, first serve basis. Registration is only for the participant. Each child must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver form at the registration table the day of the clinic.

Historic Richmond Town's Tavern Terrace Concert Series Featuring “No Quarter” every Saturday until 8/25 from 6–11 at Historic Richmond Town, 441 Clarke Ave. The Tavern Terrace is a weekly concert series to help raise money to help rehabilitate the J. Join Kayak Staten Island for FREE public kayaking off the shore at Conference House Park, 7455 Hylan Blvd. on Sunday 8/5 from 11-2!  Boats and life jackets will be provided for a short paddle. Launch help and paddling tips are given by experienced kayakers at the shore and on the water. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet. Spring has sprung!  I actually see green in my yard, buds on the trees and the crocus has begun to show itself.  Have you started Spring cleaning?  Nope, I haven’t either!  On Saturday, 3/28 from noon – 3:00, you will have a chance to Stop ‘N’ Swap at Christ Church in New Brighton at 76 Franklin Ave.  It is sponsored by GrowNYC.org/Swap, an outreach and education program of the Department of Sanitation.  So bring your clean, reusable, portable items such as clothing, house wares, electronics, books and toys that you no longer need.  And take home something new to you, FREE.  P.S. You are in for a treat this weekend, not only because today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday) will be in the 70’s (extending my beloved Summer for a few more days) but because the 27th Universal Temple of the Arts Staten Island Jazz Festival takes place on Saturday, 10/18, from 2-7:00 at the Music Hall in Snug Harbor Cultural Center, 1000 Richmond Terrace.  The co-founder and executive director of the UTA, the tireless Sajda Musawwir Ladner, stated in a recent interview that the annual musical marathon "is a direct extension of Universal Temple of the Arts' mission of  'quickening the creative spirit in the individual and community and fostering brotherly love’.  It provides a stage upon which UTA's students, community members and world-renowned artists…

In an article in the Staten Island Advance, it was noted that the Economic Development Corp. released a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) for the purchase and redevelopment of the Department of Sanitation Garage in New Brighton.  This garage has been a thorn in the side of the neighborhood for over fifty years.  Elected officials and neighborhood activists have long considered the garage an environmental blight on the community and stumbling block to any plans to revitalize the Jersey Street corridor. In the winter, the Sanitation trucks idle for hours in the neighborhood awaiting the starting pistol to "move the plows" when the snow hits the pavement.  Pedestrians are forced to walk on the street as trucks block walk-ways.  In the summer, the…
