HAPPY NEW YEAR 2020!! Did you get to beat pots and pans outside at the strike of midnight? For as long as I can remember from childhood through adulthood, whenever we had a New Year's party at  home, it was our family tradition to stand on the porch and bang pots and pans, cow bells and/or other noisemakers to welcome in the new year.  We could hear all the boats in the Kill Van Kull sounding their horns in unison as we listened to fireworks going off all around the neighborhood. What are your New Year traditions?  Please feel free to share.

I pray that you, my gentle readers, enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday. Did you take any hikes this week, especially the after-Thanksgiving or Black Friday hikes to counteract overeating or over imbibing? The Winter Wilderness Survival in Von Briesen Park with the Urban Park Rangers sounded like a fun family event. Did you attend any of the Tree Lighting ceremonies or Shop Small and Local on Small Business Saturday?

I’m going to share a secret about my family. . .We are diehard fans of Fleet Week! From childhood, before it was called “Fleet Week”, ships would dock on Staten Island and Dad would strengthen our weak little legs enough (with hard work around the house! Lol!) to climb up and down those ladders and through the ship without tripping, slipping or complaining. It was an exciting experience for us, and every year, without a miss, we would wait on lines to tour the ships. Since then, our family would venture to Ft. Wadsworth and wait for the Parade of Ships. Usually, it  would take a couple or more hours before the first one would come under the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge. YES, SPRING IS ON ITS WAY!  We have had ice, sleet, snow the last couple of days and weeks but also weather in the high 40’s.  Not your typical winter, I know, but it gives us some hope of warmth in the near future.  Of course, the other surprise was a quick snow storm which gave my grandkiddies a chance to shovel snow with their Dad and build a snowman.  See also the photos of the crocuses popping up all over and other signs of spring.

Did you attend the NYC Dept. of Small Business Services “Business Planning Basics” last Wednesday? There is nothing like being your own boss.  This course is a good start to organizing your business plan and making your dream of owning a small business a reality.  Did you hear Author Kristin Pitanza discuss Speed My Way Up?  I’m sure many of you have your own thoughts about relocating to Staten Island and others about how the Island changed after the Verrazzano Bridge was built and the ensuing overbuilding and overcrowding, especially on the roads.

HAPPY NEW YEAR to all my gentle readers!  I pray you rang in the New Year 2019 with people you love and care about.  Two years ago, I posted lyrics from a Tim McGraw song, “Humble and Kind” written by Lori McKenna which always touches my soul especially the last paragraph.  “Don't take for granted the love this life gives you, When you get where you're going don't forget turn back around, And help the next one in line, Always stay humble and kind.”  If only we could use this mantra in our every day lives……..

Thanksgiving is on Thursday!  Will you watch the Macy’s Annual Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV?  Will you host family and friends to celebrate the day?  Will you serve dinner to those who are less fortunate?  Do you feel fine just doing NOTHING and get annoyed with friends who insist you come to their house?!  Tell me what kind of side dishes you will cook; do you have a pasta dish, a specific cultural dish or multiple courses of food.  I’d love to know what your Thanksgiving Day table looks like—will you share pictures with me next week.

It’s back to school this week for most students after a long hot, hot, hot summer!  Please remind your kids to be aware of other children who may not feel comfortable starting a new school or a new class. Tell them to smile and be friendly. Let them know that it’s OK to be nervous and remind them to be kind to their fellow students—they may be nervous also! Bullying should never be tolerated! Remind them if they see something that doesn’t look or feel right, they should tell their teacher, parents or caregivers.
