Did you become one with nature this week?  Did you receive a FREE Rain Barrel at Snug Harbor or go on the Bird and Nature Walk on Wednesday, join the St. Francis Catholic Singles on a Hike through the Greenbelt, take a kayak tour of Fresh Kills, start seedlings on your window sill, or visit Jay Weichun’s site: http://www.growingfoodonstatenisland.com/ to see how gardeners on Staten Island enjoy their hobby?  Or did you attend the Integrated Pest Management workshop on Thursday?

I attended the workshop at the Joe Holzka Community Garden on Castleton Ave. and Barker St. which was hosted by the Parks Dept. and attended by people from community and personal gardens.  It was very informative describing all kinds of pests such as aphids, whiteflies, slugs…

At first I thought I would be bored since it is geared towards seniors.  Was I surprised!  The seniors in this class can out-Zumba me any day as well as participate in the Senior Olympics, dance and work out in the gym. Did you try kayaking with Kayak Staten Island last Saturday or ride the “Bueno Cruise”?  Did you taste the secret special sauce at the Sandy Ground Festival or attend “Midsummer Night’s Dream” at High Rock?  It was a perfect weather weekend to be outdoors, experience nature and do some people watching.  I snapped some photos this weekend while admiring neighborhood gardens,

people watching, (two very colorfully dressed couples from the Bronx in African garb),

nature--(check out Mom and baby!),

and taking in this beautiful stained glass window on a church in PA.  This window speaks a thousand words--Love one another!Bring your children to Wonderful Wednesday, at the Tottenville Library, 7430 Amboy Rd. today, Wednesday at 4 for a fun program…

If you are a Mom, Aunt, Grandmother or Sister, I hope Mother’s Day was joyful.  If your Mom has passed, it can be a sad day remembering the many good times that you shared with her.  Also, if you have lost a child, your heart breaks when you relive every moment you spent loving that child. Mothers are special, but mothering is a hard job and at times, thankless.  However, when that same child smiles up at you or takes your hand in his, everything becomes so right with the world!  Thank you, my gentle readers—Diane Jakubowski Darconte, Frances Thompson, Dil Gillani, Trish Keogan Treadaway, Judie and Diane Zagajeski and Patricia Joyce for sharing the following photos that honor your moms and/or show you being honored and loved as well.
