WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (7/6 – 7/10/16)

Did you participate in any of the week’s events at the Beach--Ocean Breeze Night Run (http://oceanbreezenyc.org), Boardwalk Days-Give Back Wednesdays (http://www.boardwalkdays.com), Fireworks at South Beach (http://boardwalkdays.com/fireworks) or the concerts (www.boardwalkdays.com)?  What better way is there to stay cool than at the Beach?  I hope your 4th of July holiday was fun, the fireworks were beautiful but safe and you remembered to use sun screen or lotion.  See below a patriotic house on the North Shore with flags a-flying and the monument to our New Brighton WW II servicemen killed in action at the corner of Brighton and Lafayette Avenues.

Make your own “Under the Sea” Paper Lantern at the Tottenville Library, 7430 Amboy Rd. today, 7/6 at 3 for ages 4 and up.  Space is limited; pre-register at 718-984-0945.

Boogie Woogie Wednesdays begin tonight at 5 at the Staten Island Children's Museum, 1000 Richmond Terr. Sponsored in part by the Staten Island Delegation to the NYC Council and Dunkin Donuts, Boogie Woogie Wednesday is a FREE outdoor music and dance program AND a great way to sneak some family time into a busy week. Why not pack a picnic dinner, dine under the tent on the Meadow and then dance the night away?  At 5-Free admission begins and Exhibits open for play, 5:30-Story time with Literacy INC, 6:30-Snacks (while supplies last), 7-Dancing Begins and at 8-Museum closed.

Coloring is no longer just for kids! Coloring Our Collections takes place Thursday, 7/7 at 2 at the Mariners Harbor Library, 206 South Ave.  It is a fantastic way to relax and just be creative for ages 12-18.  So come unwind and relax during the summer break. The Baby & Me programs take place at Tottenville Library, 7420 Amboy Rd. every Thursday at 11.  Songs, rhymes and playtime for babies from birth to 18 months old along with a parent or caregiver are a fun opportunity to meet other babies and families.

The Borough President’s sponsored Summer Concert Series begins on Thursday at 7 at Historic Richmond Town, 441 Clarke Ave.  featuring The Rock-A-Silly Band and Grounded4Life.  Bring lawn chairs, blankets, snacks and enjoy the concert under the stars. 

The Metropolitan Summer Recital Series, in conjunction with the City Parts Foundation will present a show on Thursday at 7 in Clove Lakes Park featuring soprano Michelle Bradley, tenor Kang Wang and baritone Yunpeng Wang, joined by pianist Dan Saunders.  Another great opportunity to listen to music under the stars!

Summer Nights: The Art of Cocktails takes place Thursday from 7:30 PM - 9:30 at the Staten Island Museum at Snug Harbor, 1000 Richmond Terr., Building A.  Craft your own cocktails while exploring Staten Island’s prohibition history. One of Staten Island’s favorite bartenders, Kevin Devlin, will whet your whistle with concoctions while teaching you how to make your own. All supplies provided. Register online. Walk-ins welcome, space permitting. This event is for guests 21 and over. Your ticket includes admission to the Museum, which is open until the event begins at 7:30pm. Admission is $25/$20 Members (21+)

Bring your children ages 10-18 to a FREE Life Size Game of Chess, Friday, 7/8 at 1 at the Mariners Harbor Library, 206 South Ave. Become Alice in Wonderland or Ron in Harry Potter as you move the large pieces around the board! Have fun as you become part of the game.

Pipsqueak Picasso's, for ages 6-12, will be on Friday at 3 at the New Dorp Library, 309 New Dorp Ln.  Follow along with Miss Tanya as you learn how to paint a picture, step-by-step. All materials provided.

FREE Filmmaking Program begins Friday from 9-3 at the Universal Temple of the Arts, 425 Jersey St.  Learn how to make documentary films, make a film and get it screened. Participate in Photowalk on Saturday, 7/9 from 2-4 at Gateway National Recreation Area at Fort Wadsworth, 120 New York Ave.  Bring your camera and tour neighboring Fort Wadsworth National Park with professional photographer, Ed Coppola, and get tips on composing your own photos of the historic site and views. The Liberty Tavern Art Show will be on Saturday at 3 at the Liberty Tavern, 382 Forest Ave.  This First Annual Art Show at the Liberty Tavern will feature Artists from Staten Island. There will be a live band as well as a full kitchen menu as well as a Jagua Tattooing stand for anyone who wants a non-permanent tattoo. Some of the artists featured will be Fame Killed art, Scott Gulbin (retired firefighter who does FDNY inspired Paintings), Adrien Rondinelli and Johnny Oxen.

Attend the Sunday Boardwalk Concerts on Sunday, 7/10 and every Sunday through 9/4 from 3-8, Boardwalk Café, 300 Capodann Blvd.  From country to classic rock, jazz to show tunes, an Elvis Extravaganza to a rocking Bruce Springsteen tribute band, the musical lineup offers something for everyone. Bring a beach chair or spread a blanket out on the beach to enjoy the performance of the day.  On 7/10, you will be treated to a Rock concert by Sha Doobie/ Stones Tribute Band. The NYPD is seeking applicants for School Crossing Guard Positions.  The civilian part-time positions pay $11.79/hour to start and $13.83/hour after three years and include health insurance benefits with a 20-hour week.  If you are interested, fill out an application at NYPDCivilianJobs.com/SchoolCrossingGuard/.  You will be contacted by an NYPD representative.
