WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (9/3– 9/8/15)

Were you an attendee at the “Silent Disco” at Snug Harbor?  One of my gentle readers told me he had a blast—it was like nothing he had every experienced.  Did you catch “Ghost Busters” under the stars on Saturday?   I am embarrassed to say I have not attended even one Yoga class this summer, but that doesn’t mean it’s not therapeutic, relaxing and fun.  Try one of the Yoga classes I listed in past blogs.  Everything becomes clearer in your life; you will not be disappointed.  Maybe I’ll see you there soon.

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (8/28 – 8/30/15)

Did you visit art venues this week on Staten Island?  One of my gentle readers shared with me that she visited a number of galleries on the Island with her nieces from out of town and was pleasantly surprised.  Did you attend the Borough President’s free concert at Willowbrook Park or watch a Movie under the Stars at Faber Park or attend Boogie Woogie Wednesday?  As the days start to become less humid, the nights cooler, let’s try to enjoy every bit of summer with so many exciting happenings this week (before the kids go back to school!).  As a summer baby, I am overcompensating with activites because I know those cold days of winter, shoveling, shivering and bundling up are right around the corner.

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (8/18 – 8/23/15)

There was a lot of dancing going on at the Free concert on Saturday night and so much singing along with the hits from the 50'2 and 60's.  Frank James, The Expressions and Vito Picone and the Elegants entertained the crowd at the Freedom Circle in Midland Beach until late into the evening.  The fireworks display was the topping on the cake.  I was fortunate enough to be in the first row!  (Recognize anyone in picture?)  How is that for royal treatment?  Did you volunteer at the Forest Restoration Workshop at the Egbertville Ravine on Saturday or join in the Stargazing at Great Kills Park?

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (8/14 – 8/16/15)

Singing is good for you and your health!  Are you ready for this weekend and the Saturday Doo-Wop Show?  On 8/15, Vito Picone and the Elegants will be singing at the Freedom Circle in Midland Beach.  Opening act will be The Expressions at 6 p.m..  This is a FREE concert.  Bring your lawn chairs, put on your dancing shoes and get ready to sing along and maybe even do a dance or two or three.

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (8/7 – 8/10/15)

Did any of you attend or participate in the Frank Sinatra Sound-A-Like Competition last Saturday?  Sam Levine, of Marlboro, NJ, took home first place and a $100 cash prize for his velvety take on "The Way You Look Tonight".  He commented that he has been listening to Sinatra with his dad since he was a teen.  In my family, Mom and Dad were always singing.  Mom liked the golden oldies of her time, Dad sang Cowboy songs.  Both had beautiful voices.  Us young’uns were into musicals and of course 50’s, 60’s and 70’s.  My brother sang in a band for many years so he sings everything!  I can still remember my older sister dancing around the living room as a teen singing, “I Feel Pretty” from West Side Story.  How many of you have heard a song and it brings you…

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (7/31 – 8/2/15)

One of my gentle readers, a friend from out of state, came to visit this past weekend and wanted to know what Port Richmond was all about, especially Ralph’s Famous Ices, which I wrote about last week.  She was able to try out Ralph’s ice and taste real New York pizza.  We took her on a whirlwind tour of Manhattan and particularly, the High Line.  I usually write only about Staten Island events, but today, I’d like to mention the High Line--an elevated section of a disused New York Central Railroad spur called the West Side Line.  It was redesigned as an aerial greenway and rails-to-trails park and runs from Gansevoort St. in the Meatpacking District to 34th St. near the Javits Convention Center.  You can walk the entire length of the park or get off at…

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (7/23 – 7/26/15)

Did you get a chance to take a dip in one of the City pools or one of the many beaches on Staten Island this past week especially on the extremely hot days?  I worked in my garden and as usual, am thrilled and a bit surprised that my veggies are actually growing. The heat and humidity didn’t bother me too much!  Never did hear from any of my gentle readers whether their children walk—and I mean really walk for many blocks or miles as I did as a kid.  At a recent community meeting, a discussion ensued about the different venues for our children and teens to play ball or meet with others their ages. Some parents stated that everything is too far for their offspring.  A number of us commented to the parents that the kids can hop a bus or WALK the 7 or 10…

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (7/15 – 7/19/15)

Thanks to all our friends/customers/clients for stopping by at the Gillani Homes booth at “Back to the Beach” on Saturday and Sunday!  The bands played at both ends, there were many booths and many new attractions.  I had a blast making new friends.  One of my gentle readers and a friend, Susan, crossed off the Family Camping Staten Island from her bucket list.  She had a great time but was uncomfortable sleeping on rocks!  How did those cowboys do it on the range?  How do you “campers” keep comfortable in your sleeping bags?  Any hints would be appreciated.
