Did you attend the screening of award-winning filmmaker James Verdi’s documentary film “Loyalty & Rebellion” at the Conference House on Thursday, enjoy the cool evenings with Movies under the Stars--“Captain America: The Winter Soldier” was my favorite!, attend art openings at Snug Harbor, the 116th Anniversary Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society in Rosebank or try Walk Up Paddling at the Conference House?

If you came to “Back to the Beach” and stopped by the Gillani Homes booth, I thank those of you who signed up for my “Weekend Events on Staten Island” blog and/or took a chance on the Scratch-Off Lottery Tickets House. Below are some photos from the two days at the beach. It was nice and hot out but the sea breezes kept us cool.

What a great week!  I soaked up the sun on Friday at Lighthouse Pointe in St. George where Broadway in the Boros entertained the crowds who showed up for a live performance by cast members of “Wicked” and “The Band’s Visit”.   There were ticket and t-shirt giveaways after the performances.  And FREE admittance to the National Lighthouse Museum.  Below are some photos from the event.

Did you visit the magnificent, completely hand-made Grotto this week during the 113th Anniversary Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society?  If not, you still have a chance to enjoy the festivities this Thursday, 7/21 through 7/24 at 7:30 at Virginia Ave. in Rosebank. On Sunday, a magician was entertaining the delighted kiddies.  Enjoy music by DJ Vin D and bands throughout the festival. Following are photos of the Grotto and surrounding altars.

Back to the Beach took place on Saturday and Sunday with the sun blazing most of the day but cool breezes made the heat bearable.  Many visitors stopped by at the Gillani Homes booth to say hello and enter the chance to win a Lottery Scratch-Off Ticket House.  See the photos below.

Thanks to all our friends/customers/clients for stopping by at the Gillani Homes booth at “Back to the Beach” on Saturday and Sunday!  The bands played at both ends, there were many booths and many new attractions.  I had a blast making new friends.  One of my gentle readers and a friend, Susan, crossed off the Family Camping Staten Island from her bucket list.  She had a great time but was uncomfortable sleeping on rocks!  How did those cowboys do it on the range?  How do you “campers” keep comfortable in your sleeping bags?  Any hints would be appreciated. You still have time to get in on the adventure.  Visit: www.nyc.gov/parks/rangers/register.

I want to congratulate the Liedy family and Liedy’s Shore Inn, 748 Richmond Terrace, New Brighton, on its…

Were you able to see any of the fireworks displays in your neighborhood, at the Conference House, The Staten Island Yankees Game, Macy’s on 4th of July or listened to OutLoud reading of the Declaration of Independence?   Did you proudly fly The American flag?

There is still time to get in on Family Camping.  One of my gentle readers called me about the event, and I steered her in the right direction.  The NYC Parks is sponsoring Family Camping Staten Island.  Camp dates and parks are 7/10 at High Rock, 7/18 at Blue Heron, 8/1 at Blue Heron, 8/8 at High Rock and 8/14 at Conference House.  The Urban Park Rangers will bring almost everything you need for a night spent alfresco, including the tent, dinner and even s'mores! The staff provides most of the…

Many of you have probably made vacation plans already.  Whether it be a cruise, a vacation to see family across the country, day trips, long weekends at the lake or shore, summer is an exciting time of the year.  Packing is easy--throw a bathing suit and suntan lotion into a tote and off to the beach you go.  Sit in a park, people watch, bring a bag lunch and a good book—mini-vacation.  There are so many possibilities and many that are FREE.  Activities abound around the City and particularly, on Staten Island for the summer.

The outdoor concerts at the parks are always a favorite of mine.  When I was a child, my Dad would pack the kids up and off to Silver Lake we would go.  He would spread a blanket in the grass, we would snack on fruit—grapes,…
