Was a “music” event on your list of fun things to do this past weekend? Perhaps you attended the last of the Tavern Concerts or Motown at the St. George Library or “Guys and Dolls” at Susan Wagner H.S.--one of my favorite musicals.  You have another weekend to catch this wonderful musical.  Just visit  http://wagnerhightheater.org or call 718-698-4200 x 2841 for tickets and info.  We had some change of weather patterns with t-shirt warmth last Friday followed by a chilly, cold, “Wizard of Oz” kind of wind waking us and causing havoc on Saturday night. At least there was no snow!  Opening day for the Yankees was postponed till Tuesday because of inclement weather.  I hope you diehard fans bundled up because it is cold out there.

Today, Wednesday, 4/6…

Now that my crocus and tulip plants are starting to bloom, spring must be right around the corner.  I’m excited about spring cleaning, recycling, sharing clothes with family, friends and those less fortunate and starting anew.  There is nothing like an uncluttered house, garage, basement to put me in the mood for shorts, T-shirts, basking in the sun and a better outlook on life.  Another recycling event takes place this week and provides a great opportunity to dispose of electronics, TV’s, etc. that are merely collecting dust. Take advantage of this event on Saturday.

On Saturday, three more carolers joined our group at the Silver Lake Nursing Home to sing for the residents.  I thank my gentle readers for passing the word.  We met at the dining room on the lower level and then continued on to the dining rooms on other floors.  One senior, who is a proud 103 years old, sang merrily along with us.  On one floor, I heard an alarm go off.  It was a woman who got out of her wheel chair (thus, the alarm) and started dancing as we were singing “Santa Baby”.  Oh how these wonderful men and woman must have loved to party in their younger days!  May God bless them all and help keep their spirits up.  I want to thank my brother, Mark Kamienowski, for playing his guitar and keeping us in line and with the beat!  The St. Peter's…

Have you read my blog on Volunteerism? http://www.gillanihomes.com/blog/the-importance-of-volunteering.html. It is never too early to start volunteering or encourage your offspring, nieces, nephews or neighbor youth to do the same.  The Staten Island Children’s Museum is accepting nominations for the 24th Annual Kid of Achievement Award.  The award, which acknowledges the hard work of an 11 to 18 year old whose volunteerism has made a difference in the community, comes with a $100 honorarium and a framed certificate that is bestowed at the museum’s Circle of Friends business luncheon.  It takes place on 11/12 at the Hilton Garden Inn.  For more information on how to nominate your child, deadline, etc., call 718-273-2060, ext. 151 or visit…

There was a lot of dancing going on at the Free concert on Saturday night and so much singing along with the hits from the 50'2 and 60's.  Frank James, The Expressions and Vito Picone and the Elegants entertained the crowd at the Freedom Circle in Midland Beach until late into the evening.  The fireworks display was the topping on the cake.  I was fortunate enough to be in the first row!  (Recognize anyone in picture?)  How is that for royal treatment?  Did you volunteer at the Forest Restoration Workshop at the Egbertville Ravine on Saturday or join in the Stargazing at Great Kills Park?

Did you get a chance to take a dip in one of the City pools or one of the many beaches on Staten Island this past week especially on the extremely hot days?  I worked in my garden and as usual, am thrilled and a bit surprised that my veggies are actually growing. The heat and humidity didn’t bother me too much!  Never did hear from any of my gentle readers whether their children walk—and I mean really walk for many blocks or miles as I did as a kid.  At a recent community meeting, a discussion ensued about the different venues for our children and teens to play ball or meet with others their ages. Some parents stated that everything is too far for their offspring.  A number of us commented to the parents that the kids can hop a bus or WALK the 7 or 10…

 HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!

Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain. On Staten Island, we celebrate by attending the 4th of July Parade in Travis,  barbecues, picnics, baseball games, family reunions, celebrating the history and traditions of the United States.  Patriotic songs such as "The Star Spangled Banner", "God Bless America",  "America the Beautiful", "My Country, Tis of Thee", "This Land is Your Land", "Stars and Stripes Forever" are played and sung at events on this day and bring tears to my eyes.  I Love America, the best country in the world!

The 105th 4th…

Did you attend the Tribute to support and honor our NYPD officers as well as fallen officers? Or attend the Family Fun Day sponsored by the South Shore BID at the various Richmond County Savings Banks sites?  Did you dance till you dropped last weekend—ballroom, Latin, Country line dancing?  Or take a hike through Fresh Kills?  If you have photos of you or your family or friends at any of these events and would like to share, I will be happy to post them.
