Did you attend Con-Ed Stem Family Day: Dancing Skeletons at Staten Island MakerSpace, Port Richmond Comic-Con at the Pt. Richmond Library, take a Fall Nature Bike Tour at Brookfield Park or bring your 2, 3, 4 year olds to Greenbelt Peepers or Tree Tots at Greenbelt Nature Center in Blood Root Valley? Did you honor our veterans at the Staten Island Oktoberfest sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Staten Island and Rolling Thunder Chapter 2 NY or Turn & Learn Compost Work Day (NYC Compost Project) at Sung Harbor Cultural Center?

I participated in the Preservation League of Staten Island’s walking tour around New Brighton’s Hamilton Park neighborhood featuring “Porches, Pillars and Posts” led by Eloise Calderwood and John Kilcullen. It began at Christ…

What a great week!  I soaked up the sun on Friday at Lighthouse Pointe in St. George where Broadway in the Boros entertained the crowds who showed up for a live performance by cast members of “Wicked” and “The Band’s Visit”.   There were ticket and t-shirt giveaways after the performances.  And FREE admittance to the National Lighthouse Museum.  Below are some photos from the event.

The 4th of July came and the humidity felt worse than ever.  People were complaining in the air conditioned mall and everywhere I went how humid it was outside!  What?!  I enjoyed the cool evening on my front porch and played Scrabble a number of times while chilling out. The Staten Island Philharmonic entertained at Alice Austen House on the 4th and at Willowbrook Park on the 7th.  The Borough President’s FREE Sunset Summer Concert Series at Midland Beach, featuring Brother Dynamite and The Resistance, was a great evening of entertainment with the cool sea air. Did you try kayaking with Kayak Staten Island at Conference House Park on Sunday? There are plenty of ways to stay cool without air conditioning. I actually worked on my garden a few late…

In the 1950’s, my Dad would take us children to Sailors Snug Harbor (now called Snug Harbor Cultural Center), where aged, retired seamen "snugs" resided.  I vividly remember cattle, horses and other animals in the fields that abut Henderson Avenue in Randall Manor.

We never went into any of the buildings, which  were the living quarters, a hospital, morgue, chapel, among others. Dad would engage the “snugs” in conversation as we sat with them on benches around the grounds of the Harbor.  I can still hear the snugs’ voices as they entertained us with stories of their lives at sea which sounded so exciting, especially to someone young and impressionable, like me. After I watched old movies like “Moby Dick” “Captains Courageous” and “The Caine Mutiny”, I…

Watching the Parade of ships on Wednesday at the beginning of Fleet Week was a treat!  Many had binoculars; some brought ladders to get a better view, some children sat on their parent’s shoulders.  A group from a senior citizen home arrived, climbed up the steep inclines of Von Briesen Park near Ft. Wadsworth, some with walkers, some with wheel chairs.  After a few hours of waiting, they left without seeing one ship but literally exercised while waiting, doing tai chi (put me to shame!) and enjoyed the fresh air.  The first ship of the “Parade” arrived around noon.

Touring the ships the next day was neat!

The Memorial Day Parade took place on Monday. The weather was threatening torrential rain, but the sun shone beautifully shortly…

On Saturday, I attended the book signing of “The Dimension Travel Trilogy”, met the young author, Joseph S. Pidoriano, and was glad to see so many books jumping off of the table and many of his fans waiting to have their books signed.  The books can be purchased on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/go/aw/d/099688890X/.  Following are a number of photos from the event.

Fleet Week 2016 begins today, Wednesday, at 8 a.m.  You can watch the parade of ships from the Alice Austen House Museum grounds at 2 Hylan Blvd., with Fred Rodriguez, a maritime historian, narrating.  Free coffee and donuts will be available. As I continue to think about the quote, “The best things in life are not THINGS!”, I wonder how many of you agree.  If you would care to share your opinion, I am all ears!  My cousin told me he loves the security of money and what it can buy, especially his tools!  He is the type of guy who is happy in a t-shirt and jeans and not known for amassing lots of “stuff”--other than tools.  I agree with him that money gives you a sense of security, but as I de-clutter and give away things I have no use for and especially clothes that I have not worn in a long time, I question how and why I bought these “things” in the first place.  Should more thought be taken to help those who can’t help themselves, enjoy life in the present, be humble and kind?  I think I will…

My grandson’s Topsy-Turvy strawberry planter is growing beautifully in my front yard and the water recycling barrels are starting to fill up (thanks to a couple of rainfalls this week).  My garlic, chive and sage plants are doing great.

Did you celebrate Earth Day at the St. George Day Festival or listen to Tales from Shakespeare with Staten Island OutLOUD at Every Thing Goes Book Café?  Did you take a Walking Tour of Historic Westerleigh, visit the juried photo exhibit at Alice Austen House Museum or learn about the art and language of cinema at the Staten Island Creative Community?  As I gathered together with family on Sunday, observing the interaction, silliness and smiles and enjoying each other’s company, my brother quoted someone very wise, “

The Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the Staten Island Museum took place on Saturday. The Museum, situated in Building A, is grand with plenty of room to meander throughout the exhibits.  The Mastodon exhibit was a hit as well as the fossils on the first floor!  I loved the art, science and history exhibits.  The Autumn Moon Festival was entertaining with music performances, martial arts demos, dragons in the midst of the audience and a fashion show by the New York Chinese Qipao Association.

As I watch the last snow fall of the season from my home office (yes, this is the last, hopefully), I dream sweet, pleasant dreams of warmer days, my garden and how much fun I’ll have digging in the soil, planting vegetables, new plants and flowers.  Positive thinking always chases the doldrums away!

This Saturday, 3/7, a blood drive will be held from 9-3 at the gymnasium of Our Lady Help of Christians R.C. Church, 23 Summit St. in memory of Firefighter John G. Chipura, who died a hero on September 11, 2001.  I met “Chippy” on a real estate showing a few days before 9/11.  His buddy was interested in buying a commercial building and accompanied him for a second opinion.  He told me he had been a police officer at the 72nd Pct. in Brooklyn; after a few…
