Did you take a hike as my gentle reader, Diane, did last week? There are plenty of organized hikes each week, but you can always take a friend or pup and go off on your own and discover new wonderful places to get lost in nature. See this week’s choices below. A number of Christmas/Holiday Fairs took place this past week and many more will follow (see schedule at end of blog). I attended a fair at Holy Family Church Hall. So many talented artisans displayed their wares for sale.  I met friends I had not seen in years and made new ones including a couple of proud Veterans. Following are photos from this event:

On my travels Sunday afternoon, I came upon Mona Oman, a commercial artist and mother of two, beautifying the side…

Did you “Pick up a book and read!” this week? My readers responded with their thoughts about recent books they had read.

My Gentle Reader Diane wrote: “Funny you should ask... I just finished “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” by Lisa See. Through the book, I traveled to China in the 1820’s where I met Lily and followed her life into her old age as Lady Lu. I learned sadly about foot-binding, the joys and sorrows of female friendships and of nu-shu, which is the secret-code writing, developed thousands of years ago and used by women in a remote area of southern Hunan Province. I highly recommend this book!”

My Gentle Reader Mark shared: “I read a book recently called “Miracle of the Bells” by Russell Janney published in 1946. The Story involves a…

What a beautiful week! That is, until the rain came, barely stopped and then began again Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, etc.…. I want to congratulate my handsome, smart, funny, creative, first Grandchild, Gerard Nils Coogan, on his First Holy Communion which took place on a warm sunny Saturday morning at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Tottenville. He is an excellent student in 2nd grade at P.S. 3 and in his CCD class. All the children were taught well, knew their prayers and sang the beautiful songs during the Mass. I pray that Gerard will be blessed today and throughout his life. Check out the banner he designed and made for his Communion ceremony and the nod to a certain favorite creature. Hint: He is a dinosaur aficionado.

April is National Donate Life Month! For the 2019 National Donate Life Month theme, Donate Life America was inspired by bicycles and the phrase “Life is a beautiful ride.” Like the donation and transplantation journey, a bicycle serves as a symbol of progress, renewal and the moving circle of life. Nearly 9,500 New Yorkers are currently on waiting lists for donated organs that could save their lives.  If you would consider becoming an organ, eye or tissue donor, visit: https://www.donatelife.net/register/ You can also become a donor by registering with your local DMV when applying for or renewing your driver’s license. Visit:https://www.dmv.org/how-organ-donation-works.php I have been registered for many years on my license (note the heart on the right…

Have you participated in any of the hikes throughout Staten Island’s parks or attended an open house for summer camps or schools for your children?  If you would like to share photos from any of the events you attended, please feel free to email them to me and I will include in this week’s blog.

I love to see the snow melting and the green tops of plants popping out of the wet soil.  Now is the time to start planting seeds on your window sill to ready them for your garden when the last freeze is over.  As I write this, the weather is expected to go up to 50.  My kitty actually insisted on going outside to bask in the sun.  Is Mother Nature teasing me?  Time will tell.

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Colonoscopies save lives.

Did you get involved this week in your Community Board, neighborhood civic group, the PTA or any other organization where you can make a difference?  As a child, I learned from the example of my parents, relatives and friends to volunteer my services, get involved with church, school and/or neighborhood groups.   It seemed like the more I had on my plate and the busier I was in my life, the more I could accomplish.  I’m sure many of you feel the same.  We are all occupied with family, friends, health, work and our other issues which become overwhelming at times.  Somehow, I have found that when you help others, all those issues melt away.  My own opinion, of course!

This week, my grandchildren came over, and we worked on Paper Crafting. (Thanks to
