WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (5/4 – 5/8/16)

As I continue to think about the quote, “The best things in life are not THINGS!”, I wonder how many of you agree.  If you would care to share your opinion, I am all ears!  My cousin told me he loves the security of money and what it can buy, especially his tools!  He is the type of guy who is happy in a t-shirt and jeans and not known for amassing lots of “stuff”--other than tools.  I agree with him that money gives you a sense of security, but as I de-clutter and give away things I have no use for and especially clothes that I have not worn in a long time, I question how and why I bought these “things” in the first place.  Should more thought be taken to help those who can’t help themselves, enjoy life in the present, be humble and kind?  I think I will…

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (4/27 – 5/1/16)

My grandson’s Topsy-Turvy strawberry planter is growing beautifully in my front yard and the water recycling barrels are starting to fill up (thanks to a couple of rainfalls this week).  My garlic, chive and sage plants are doing great.

I hope you took advantage of the FREE health screenings at Go Red for Women: Heart Stoppers last Wednesday at the Regina McGinn Education Center.  Many of us only go to the doctor when we are sick. We’re treated and quickly forget about health issues until the next time an ailment arises.  Many years ago, I worked in the Medical Dept. of a large insurance company.  Every year, each employee had a full blood work-up, physical exam, dental check up and cleaning, PAP, mammography, counseling, chest X-rays, colonoscopies and more.  When I recall the benefits we were afforded, how could one not stay healthy?  Instead of taking the day off when you weren't feeling up to par, you visited the Medical Dept.  If your blood pressure was abnormal, you were checked…

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (9/24– 9/29/15)

The Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the Staten Island Museum took place on Saturday. The Museum, situated in Building A, is grand with plenty of room to meander throughout the exhibits.  The Mastodon exhibit was a hit as well as the fossils on the first floor!  I loved the art, science and history exhibits.  The Autumn Moon Festival was entertaining with music performances, martial arts demos, dragons in the midst of the audience and a fashion show by the New York Chinese Qipao Association.

Over 200 people attended the POW-MIA Recognition Day Ceremony at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park on Sunday.  The Thomas J. Tori Chapter 421 hosted the event with membership and Honor Guard remembering POW-MIA’s…

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (8/18 – 8/23/15)

There was a lot of dancing going on at the Free concert on Saturday night and so much singing along with the hits from the 50'2 and 60's.  Frank James, The Expressions and Vito Picone and the Elegants entertained the crowd at the Freedom Circle in Midland Beach until late into the evening.  The fireworks display was the topping on the cake.  I was fortunate enough to be in the first row!  (Recognize anyone in picture?)  How is that for royal treatment?  Did you volunteer at the Forest Restoration Workshop at the Egbertville Ravine on Saturday or join in the Stargazing at Great Kills Park?

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (6/17 – 6/21/15)

Did you meet your friends at the third annual FREE Atlantic Salt Maritime Festival on Sunday?  TheUS Coast Guard training ship Eagle was a beauty to tour.  It was a pleasure chatting with members of the crew who hail from all over the country. What a noble and terrific way to see the world!  There were plenty of activities for the kids—bouncy house, slides, arts and crafts, paper boat races, free watermelon, ices, hot dogs, cold water, music, dancing, entertainment.  Did you attend the concert “Saluting the Flag in Song and Dance” at St. John’s celebrating the 240th birthday of the U.S. Army ?  And did you fly your American Flag on Sunday, 6/14—Flag Day?  I saw many flags flying and was inspired.  Maybe patriotism and love of our country is returning. …

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (4/16-4/19/15)

I continue to bellyache about potholes everywhere I drive (why aren’t they repaired/filled in?), trash dumped out of cars in front of my house and by pedestrians wherever they see fit, on the highways, local streets, vacant lots and graffiti.  Does this bother anyone else or are we becoming immune to the state of our Island?  Our elected officials, BP Oddo, Council members Ignizio, Matteo and Rose, have announced the start of a social media campaign where Islanders can share these issues in a number of ways.

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (3/20-3/22/15)

I accompanied my grandson to a special St. Patrick’s Day event at the Tottenville Branch of the New York Public Library on Tuesday.  Miss Amy, one of my grandson’s favorite librarians, read a number of books that featured “green” themes.  After reading, the children sang songs and then watched as Miss Amy turned a stuffed caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly.  Each child was given a chance to open the Velcro caterpillar and observe the transformation.  They were enchanted!  Afterwards, there were arts and crafts to color, decorate with glitter, cut out and bring home.  I always have a grand time watching the children and seeing their faces light up when they participate in reading and programs.

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (2/20-2/22/15)

How many of you attended the Pink Carpet Affair Girls Nite Out at the NYC Cypher Arts Building on Saturday?  Did you plan your Italian vegetable garden at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden on Sunday?  Did you celebrate Fat Tuesday at a local pub or eat pancakes at one of the Staten Island churches on Shrove Tuesday? 

I am happy to announce that Spring is on its way, and I look forward to saying “adios” to Winter.  I started my seedling garden in my windowsill with herbs to get a head start this year.  It’s good to get our minds off of boots, heavy coats, long johns and instead think tulips, crocuses (or croci) and warm weather.  How’s that for positive thinking?
