Borough President James Oddo strikes up another island-wide campaign this month. The national "Movember" movement takes place over the month of November, encouraging men to grow out their mustaches. The facial hair, however, is just a playful symbol of the deeper meaning: to raise awareness of prostate cancer and other men's health risks, and to have more men take an active interest in their health.

Oddo asks residents to post their Movember pictures on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram with the tag #simovember. Photos with this tag may be reposted on Oddo's Staten Island USA accounts. To further raise awareness, participants are asked to also tag the men in their lives. For those unable to grow a real one, printable cutouts are…

BFC Partners, the developers of the upcoming Empire Outlets complex in St. George, are planning yet another big project in Stapleton.

The new building will be located at 475 Bay Street, a few short blocks away from the Stapleton train station. Of the proposed eight floors, the first will contain almost 9,000 square feet of retail space, and floors 2 through 8 will contain 214 residential units. The building will also have its own enclosed parking lot. Permit applications were filed Monday morning, along with zoning change requests. The current zone codes do not allow the space to be used for residential purposes, but only for light manufacturing and commercial use.

Did you ever wonder who lived in your house before you, or maybe before the last owner or 5 or 10 owners before that?  Was it merely a house or was it a home?  Did they have many children, were they educated in a one-room school house or taught by a tutor at home?  Were they rich, poor?  Did they have servants?  Did they have a farm, horses, chickens, cows?  What kind of "real estate" was trendy and sought after in those days of yore?

I own a home on the North Shore of Staten Island where three generations of my own family have lived, died, been born, had Thanksgiving dinners, opened gifts under the Christmas tree, laughed, cried--all in these very rooms.  The fourth generation was born and a sibling on the way, and I cannot wait to share the…

It is the Merchant Group's hope that more will join the fold of over ten new businesses that have opened in the past year.  The group will soon incorporate into a non-profit called the New Dorp Local Development Corporation and has big plans to set in motion.

Tottenville's Conference House, also known as Billop Manor, a 300 year old historic Staten Island landmark will bring some theatrical scares this October. The house is the setting for local playwright Joe Simonelli's thriller entitled "The Haunting of Billop House" whos writing was inspired by legends of a haunted Conference House. The four character play, with the house itself serving as the fifth, will be staged in the basement. The story follows a new caretaker who is intrigued by the mysterious connection she feels to the house.

"The Haunting of Billop House," stars, from the left, Travis Hentrich, Summer Moran, Debbie O'Brien, and Jai Sada. The original show, (script by Tottenville playwright Joe Simonelli) plays through Nov. 1 in the Conference…
