Or visit the Christmas Wonderland display at 107 Sharrotts Rd. by Joseph DiMartino in memory of his wife, Debra Ann, a victim of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack at the World Trade Center?  You still have a few more days to enjoy this show!  It is FREE but a donation box is present if you want to give to the Nalitt Institute's Outpatient Children's Cancer Unit at Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze.

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (10/12 - 10/16/16)

Did you donate an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots Drive at Edward Jones this week or sign up for FREE piping and drumming lessons at St. Albans with Richmond County Pipes and Drums or attend the SIMHS Touch-A-Truck Fundraiser?  Did you enjoy one of the last weeks of warm weather as I did, gaze at the remainder of the summer flowers, pick the runt-of-the litter cucumber hiding on the fence enjoy the scent of the beautiful rose on a chilly October day, wonder whether to  pick the melon? or squash? growing on my fence from the neighbor’s yard  or marvel at the caterpillars that return each year to the parsley plants, eat them all up and disappear mysteriously into the night as butterflies.  A new season is practically upon us; I suppose the time is right…

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (9/28– 10/2/16)

I am still not ready to run outside in the morning wearing more than a t-shirt and shorts.  By the afternoon, it becomes warm again and by evening, it is great sleeping with open windows.  I am beginning to miss summer, though.  How did you spend the weekend?  Did you visit the many art exhibits and galleries on Staten Island? Did you meet someone special at the St. Francis Catholic Singles Wine & Cheese Social, take a Belly Dancing class with Rachel or go on a hike or walk through the Island’s many parks?  A great time was had by all at the Westerleigh Folk Festival 2016 on Saturday.  The rain was a downer in the morning but soon cleared up to a perfectly mild sunny day.  Continuous musical acts entertained the visitors as well as free pony rides and…

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (9/14– 9/18/16)

As I reflect on the horrible disaster of September 11, watched as families memorialized their loved ones who perished at Ground Zero and again Sunday evening in St. George at The Postcards monument to the Staten Islanders who were lost, I remember the extraordinary feeling of unity that occurred afterwards.  People said “hello” at the bus stop, on the ferry, on the street.  Houses of worship were filled with people looking for answers, asking “why” and praying for unity, love and understanding.  I feel we have forgotten, not what happened that day and those who perished, but the love and understanding that is needed to exist in a peaceful world.  I strongly believe in the power of prayer so today, I pray for unity once more.  My gentle readers, will you…

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (8/31– 9/5/16)

On Wednesday, I accompanied my grandchildren to an interactive musical production featuring Presley and Melody at the Tottenville Library.  They sing

(with words to the songs on a screen so all can sing along), dance and include every child in their production by sharing props—rainbows, blow-up guitars, pom-poms, smiley face paddles.

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (8/14 – 8/20/16)

I don’t know about you, but when the weather gets into the 90’s with real feels above 100, I become listless and lazy.  It’s a good time to get involved with anything air conditioned like libraries, museums, gyms or if outside the beach, pools, reading underneath a tree in the park, family picnics or hanging out with the kiddies at the sprinklers.  You can’t just stop exercising?  Did you take a Zumba class this week or practice your Ballroom Dancing at the Social at the Y on Sunday? Did you take your children to one of the events at the many libraries on Staten Island?  I know we will soon be complaining about the chill in the air, so let us enjoy our gardens and the outdoors, do a bit of weeding in the early evenings and pick those juicy tomatoes,…

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (7/13 – 7/17/16)

Did your child make an “Under the Sea” Paper Lantern at the Tottenville Library on Wednesday?  This little girl made a darling paper lantern, decorated it with stickers and was happy to hang out with Curious George afterwards.  Photowalk at Fort Wadsworth on Saturday was an eye opener!  With professional photographer, Ed Coppola, as our guide, we captured photos of all the many angles and views of the Verrazano Bridge and the many edifices—inside and out—of the Fort.  A Gateway Park Service volunteer filled us in on the background of this historic site. All of the fotogs, down to the youngest child had a ball snapping pictures.

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (6/15 - 6/19/16)

On Saturday, I attended the Mass to celebrate the feast day of St. Anthony at the very beautiful St. Anthony of Padua Church in Travis.  Some of my gentle readers were in attendance, and I made some new friends.  The special "St. Anthony's Bread" was distributed during the service and also to the neighbors along the streets.  A band played music through the Travis neighborhood after the celebration as the procession was led by parishioners holding the photo of St. Anthony and others carrying a large statue of St. Anthony draped in dollar bills. The good parishioners hosted a reception thereafter while the band entertained us all.

WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (5/24 – 5/30/16)

On Saturday, I attended the book signing of “The Dimension Travel Trilogy”, met the young author, Joseph S. Pidoriano, and was glad to see so many books jumping off of the table and many of his fans waiting to have their books signed.  The books can be purchased on Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/go/aw/d/099688890X/.  Following are a number of photos from the event.  

Fleet Week 2016 begins today, Wednesday, at 8 a.m.  You can watch the parade of ships from the Alice Austen House Museum grounds at 2 Hylan Blvd., with Fred Rodriguez, a maritime historian, narrating.  Free coffee and donuts will be available. WEEKEND EVENTS ON STATEN ISLAND (5/18 – 5/22/16)

I hope you enjoyed the photos that my gentle readers shared last week of their mothers.  If you wish to send in a photo, I will post any and all of them.  This week, I took a long road trip with my son, daughter-in-law and two precious grandchildren.  It was trying at times and  filled with activity, but I was glad to spend four entire days with my loved ones.  I was also amazed how the parents were able to get the kiddies washed, dressed, fed and on the road to each of the events we attended without much ado.  Wow! Was I ever that good?  Kudos to Jeff and Divonne on their excellent parenting skills!
